| Speedstream 4100 security question.
Hello all, My parents just got DSL in their Neighborhood. Man am I jealous anyway. I am going to run by and install it for them this evening. Dad said it came with a Speedstream 4100 modem. I couldn't find any manuals on it on Siemens sight. I was wanting to know does anyone know if this can do dhcp or if it has a nat firewall? I don't want their box using their public IP for security reasons. Or do I need to bring along a cheap router and toss in between the modem and box.
Thanks, Blake |

Thanks Dr. Olds |

| There is not a Manual or User Guide on the AT&T/SBC 4100 as it has a crippled/customized Firmware and Interface. The AT&T/SBC 4100 is not a Full Router and it does not have a Firewall.
»Efficient Networks Forum FAQ »I have a 4100 from AT&T (Formerly SBC) where is setup info, tips, & help
If you are reading any User Guides listed here then those are not for the AT&T/SBC 4100 and the published User Guides only cover the Retail Firmware units. The AT&T/SBC 4100 units do not have the same Features, Firmware or Web Interface.

| reply to x_789 Get a cheap router. The 4100 will not provide any protection.
If you have it configured to provide a private IP to the computer, then the computer will, in effect, be placed on the DMZ. That is, there is no protection.
So use that router to provide the protection you want.
(note - comments are for the SBC/ATT version of the 4100) |
