What is Blast?
It is described under the Comcast HSI pricing structure here: »/faq/7024 Blast! is an actual speed upgrade to 16/1 or 16/2, which will be reflected in measures of actual download and upload. Because of PowerBoost, you cannot demonstrate the Blast! upgrade has been received. You can tell by measure of actual download and upload of large files, by looking at the capped speed in some modems' diagnostic pages, or by charges on your Comcast bill (if you have actually ordered the Blast! tier.)
We're getting enough reports here, official and permanent or not, we probably should separate these out to a topic of their own.
Please make sure you actually have Blast (high sustained speeds) and not PowerBoost before posting in this topic.
Tell us: 1. Your location 2. Whether FIOS is available in your area or not.
READ THIS FIRST! READ THIS, TOO!
ok, make us all drool.

Would be helpful if those posting about receiving speed upgrades also post whether FIOS is available in their market.
Not getting my hopes up since Comcast has no competition (speed wise) here in my area. |

| fios is not available in my area. (i had the post from the OP, 2nd one down)
it's odd though, we had verizon dig up a large portion of our main line for about 2/3 of a 3 year period just to lay fiber optic lines. that only ended 2 years ago, and was only a few blocks from my street.. not sure why we havn't gotten it yet, seeing that we're so close to what seems to be one of their main hubs in the area. |

No Fios in my House |
I just got a letter from Comcast about the increase in upload speed. Rebooted my modem and...
I know, Miami is too far away to test well, but the NJ test site was busy.
And in answer to the question about FIOS competition, it is not available here.
Edit: test to NJ on Thurs morning;

Noticed the change late Wed. night (10/18) when came back to the computer and downloaded something around 100 MB, was like "woah, why is that over 8 Mbps speed being sustained for so long?!! Did they extend the time for PowerBoost??" LOL Seems the modem rebooted itself some time in the evening. Download speed varies a bit as expected, and peeks up to 16.2 Mbps at times (tested with a commercial newsgroup service download). Upload speed to a server I use is a solid 140 KB/sec (so actually 1.09375 Mbps)! Wild. Downloading and uploading at the same time do affect each other a bit, usually coming out to around 13 Mbps down and 110-118 KB/sec up. Not bad at all, the extra $10 finally feels worth something! Wow, I almost remember original uncapped @Home days now... hehe |

BTW, still at the old "silver tier" speeds here.

| reply to sortofageek Well I had the new speeds but now theyre gone I received the Letter Tuesday. Tuesday night I was seeing 12 Megs sustained down. Wednesday I Exchanged my modem because I had a very old surboard 4100. Now I just get a capped 8 Megs . I notice the letter said free for "Existing" customers. I hope my modem exchange didnt screw it up. Maybe Im in the system as a new customer now , and cant be sent the 16 meg .cfg after a power cycle I'll give it a few days , because I hate dealing with Comcast directly. Ill inquire about that and wind up w/ TV & Phove shutoff or something lol.

| reply to sortofageek I posted in another thread but for completeness here, we live in Newton, MA and got the letter Wednesday. We have FIOS in our town as well as RCN's internet cable service. Without my doing anything I got speeds of 9-13Meg down and 900+ up Wednesday afternoon but saw no power boost kick in when I downloaded large files: the download rate was a constant. Today however, I grabbed a tv show from the UK and power boost definitely kicked in..peaking to 20-25Meg for the transfer. |

I should mention I was on hold for about 25 minutes before she returned and asked what the account that needed to be reset was. F&&k you Comcast. |

| November COULD make sense because the tech I spoke to via live chat said in the next 3 mos for Massachusetts areas with FIOS. However I remember when I got the 8mb/s upgrade I asked them and she said no idea when it was coming, then I reset my modem that afternoon and I had it.

| reply to sortofageek Fios is nowhere near me (Pennsburg, PA, closest fios deployment I've heard of is 30-40 miles away), but we terminate out of an area close to it (New Hanover, PA), so we've got the upgrade. Yaay!
I received the snailmail notification of the upgrade a couple weeks ago, but the new speed didn't show up for me at first. After some back and forth with Comcast and having a tech out, it turns out that while my motorola sb4200 could handle the 8mbit tier just fine, with the addition of bursting and the subsequent 16mbit upgrade, it somehow got stuck at ~6mbit even though it was getting the 16mbit config file and used to manage 8mbit just fine. Weeeeeird. Swapped it out for an sb5120 after a tech came out to check my lines and swap a questionable filter and grounding block and BAM, 16mbit from the 5120 when the 4200 could only manage 6....
I remember hearing some of the sb4100s couldn't handle the 8mbit tier originally, but I didn't think this affected me. Looks like it did.
Word to the wise: if you think you should have the upgrade and don't see it, it might be time to try a new modem. |
