Competition?

Here in Evansville, IN, Insight is currently upgrading their basic tier to 10/1, was wondering if SBC is going to compete with that or if I should switch back to Insight, have used both and am happy with both...don't really like paying for a phone line I don't use anyway.

The absolute maximum for ADSL is 8/1.

The question being how much will Insight's 10/1 cost? Chances are I would rather pay $34.99 for 6mbps/768kbps than whatever Insight is probably going to charge for 10mbps. I don't care how fast cable gets, until their prices come down DSL will still be the best value.

although, even with the max being 8/1, i was peeping over an ATT tech shoulder when my line was acting up and it said my line supported 12.X/5.X.

i couldnt believe my eyes, although i doubt that will be happening anytime soon.

The speed upgrade is free of charge to existing customers, and no price difference for new customers either, so, because I have Insight digital cable, I would only pay $30/month for Insight's internet service, as opposed to the $50 I pay for AT&T's internet service and required, unused phone line. the reason I went to AT&T in the first place is Insight was only 4 megs for their basic tier and 6 for their plus (plus is $75/month) and AT&T costs me $50(as stated above) for the same speeds as Insight's Plus, but now that Insight has upgraded their network and is increasing the caps, it's no longer saving me money...anyone else think I should switch back?

on a side note, I heard that AT&T's contracts were gone, does that mean existing ones too or just no contracts for new people

Re: Competition?

Regarding speeds and prices, cable is normally faster at higher cost (Comcast is $56.95 per month for 4M service in my area without cable TV service; I need cable TV like you need POTS), DSL is slower at lower cost (AT&T Yahoo! HSI Elite (6016/768) is now $34.99 in my area).

What other cablecos charge may be different, though. Always, you need to weigh what you are willing to pay for what is offered, and then sign up for what you consider to be the best deal for your needs/wants.

As for contracts, those were only one-year contracts; renewable only if they still have contracts when the current contract ends. For those of us on contracts, they will be in force until they expire; twelve months from when they were begun. Nearly as I can tell, after the contract the price will rise to the old month-to-month rates unless the subscriber calls in to re-rate to one of the current price plans.

In your case, if you are paying $50 for POTS plus DSL, that is actually a good price; unless you don't need POTS. But the other side of the coin is whether a cable subscriber can get "naked HSI". In Comcast land that is not possible. I'd have to pay an extra $13.41 per month for unnecessary basic cable TV to shave the HSI price down. I'd still be paying $56.36 per month, though my speed tier would be 6M instead of 4M. But I consider that option to be the same as having to pay for POTS when it is not needed.

Does Insight charge the same price for cable HSI w/o TV as for cable HSI w/ TV? Comcast surely does not.

Re: Competition?

In Evansville, Insight charges $39.95/month with no other services for their HSI, $10.00 less if you have digital cable (which I already do), and $15 off if you have digital cable and phone service.

and no, I have absolutely no need for a POTS line, I've never used it and never intend to, just use my cell.

So Insight also has "unbundling" fees. Same as Comcast, same as "dry loop" DSL.

I have no need for cable TV, so I either have to pay the "unbundling" fee to get cable HSI, or forget about cable HSI.

I do use POTS, I don't need cable TV. There is no incentive for me to switch from DSL to cable HSI.

One other thing to consider - do you download a lot? I don't know how aggressive Insight monitors the amount of downloading an internet customer does but I've not yet heard of AT&T shutting off anyone because they are download hogs. Of course the technology is different but I regularly connect to my work to monitor several real time processes. The graphics displays are fairly bandwidth intensive.

I've got Insight for Cable and have considered switching from AT&T but I'm concerned that I could be tagged for downloading too much.

You also need to consider reliability. So far I have not had a major connectivity problem with SBC and although the local cable co offers a 15/1 package (about $10 more than SBC's 6/512), they have had many speed/reliability/overloading problems.

My uncle, who lives about 2-3 miles from me does not have access to DSL, so his only option is cable internet. He has had serious problems with his connection the past few months until today when apparently giving him a new modem solved the problem. That is after about 15 tech visits to no avail who tried everything from new lines to new filters to frequency changes.

That is why I am wary about switching to cable, but with my family looking to rid of the landline, it looks like I may have no choice after this contract expires.
