[Vista] Call for assistance - Vista FAQ

The forum co-hosts would like to put out a call for volunteers interested in working with us to create a FAQ in support of the Vista operating system.

Contributors would be involved in on-line and mailing list discussions pertaining to the structure and content of the FAQ and should be prepared to share an e-mail address and be able to use the Messenger chat application for communication amongst the group. As the FAQ evolves, they will have author and edit rights to the documents for future additions, corrections and maintenance.

Those who may be interested should post in this thread. We would also like to use this opportunity to ask for any ideas, recommendations, suggestions, etc., from you (the user) and what you believe would be important to this FAQ.

i think one of the biggest questions people will have is "which flavor of vista is right for me?"
could use a breakdown of what is added with each of the versions, and what is important based on a person's uses of his/her computer.

Over 100 views and not one brave soul is stepping up? That's a little disappointing considering those who have been talking som\ much about the OS over the past few months.

So far it's running good at 1024 X 768 32 bit. I would be glad to furnish feedback. As a side note ,after I Downloaded this huge file (2.93 GB)during the install, it ask which version I wanted to purchase...It offered something like 8 or 9 versions...I chose Business version and then went on with the install.

Windows Anytime Upgrade: frequently asked questions
Here are answers to some common questions about Windows Anytime Upgrade.
What do I have to buy?
To upgrade to another edition of Windows Vista, you must purchase the upgrade online. Windows Anytime Upgrade automatically takes you to the website where you can purchase the upgrade. After purchasing the upgrade, you're instructed to download software that prepares your computer for the upgrade. The software takes a few minutes to download.
Why do I need the Windows Vista disc?
You install the upgraded edition of Windows Vista from the Windows Vista disc.
All editions of Windows Vista are included on the Windows Vista disc. The software that you download after you purchase the upgrade includes a product key. This product key determines which edition of Windows Vista that you can install from the disc.
How can I obtain a Windows Vista disc?
The Windows Vista disc may have come with your computer when you purchased it, or you may have purchased the disc to upgrade to Windows Vista. If you can’t find your disc, you can order a new one from the same website where you purchase the upgrade. After you click Begin upgrade process, Windows Anytime Upgrade automatically takes you to the website where you can purchase the upgrade and order the disc.
Your new disc will be sent in the mail. You are required to pay shipping and handling charges only.
How can I upgrade Windows Vista on a computer other than the one that I use to buy the upgrade?
Purchase the upgrade.
Download the software file that prepares your computer for the upgrade.
Save the software file, and then copy it to the computer that you want to upgrade.
Install the software on the computer that you want to upgrade, and follow the directions on the screen.
You will need the Windows Vista disc to complete the upgrade.
You can use Windows Anytime Upgrade only on a computer that's already running Windows Vista. You can’t use Windows Anytime Upgrade to upgrade a computer that's running an earlier version of Windows.
When you buy an upgrade for a different computer, you must indicate the edition of Windows Vista that you're currently running on the computer that you want to upgrade, and you must also indicate the edition of Windows Vista that you want to upgrade to.
How can I upgrade to a different edition of Windows Vista on more than one computer?
You must purchase a new upgrade for each computer on which you want to install a different edition of Windows Vista. You can purchase only one upgrade at a time. You can use the same Windows Vista disc to upgrade the operating system on each computer.
If a feature of an upgraded edition of Windows Vista requires specific hardware, how can I find out whether my computer has the hardware for that feature?
Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is available to determine whether you have the hardware that is necessary to use specific features of a particular edition of Windows Vista. The Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor is a program that you can download and run on your computer to find out if it's ready for an upgrade. Your computer must be running Windows XP or Windows Vista. This download is approximately 5 megabytes.
Note
Downloading this file over a high-speed Internet connection may take just a few minutes. Downloading this file over a modem or other slower Internet connection may take more time.

i will help, and wanted to offer, but i wouldn't consider myself a vista expert. i installed RC1 build 5600 when it was offered (3 weeks ago?), and just installed RC2 build 5744 yesterday.
both are functional in a dual boot (tri boot) with win xp pro, on separate partitions on my sata drive.

For anyone concerned about breaking any beta agreements with Microsoft, rest assured FAQs will not be made public unless (a) the information is already available via the Company web site or (b) the OS is released.

I've sent IM's to those who've expressed a desire to assist. Thanks to those I've "drafted" into the program.

What we would now like to see are suggestions for items to be included. Everyone's input is greatly appreciated.

How do i login to Windows Vista as an Administrator using the Administrator account and not an Administrator powered account.

The Administrator account in windows vista is disabled by default so you will need to take the following steps.

1. go to Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer Management and you will have to hit "continue" on the popup asking for permission.

2. In the computer management windows you want to click on "local users and groups" and then click "users" either on the right or the left column.

3. Then you want to RIGHT CLICK the "administrator" account and choose "properties" from the drop down menu.

4. When at the properties windows you want to UNCHECK "account is disabled" under the general tab. Then proceed by clicking "apply" and "OK".

5. Now you should be back at the "computer management" windows once again right click the "administrator" account and choose "set password..." when prompted to proceed click "proceed".

6. Put in your desired password and click "ok".

You are at this point complete with enabling/password protecting the administrator account. Now so you can login as administrator the easy way follow the following steps.

1. go to Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Local Security Policy

2. click "continue" on the security warning.

3. Then you want to double click "local policies" and then "Security Options"

4. When that tree is expanded you want to look for "interactive logon: Do not display last username" on the right side.

5. Once you find "interactive logon: Do not display last username" disable it by right clicking then choosing properties and then disable.

6. Click "apply" and "OK"

Now to login you will be given a blank username field and a blank password field sord of like Windows 2000 just more funny looking.

So now to login as Administrator you log out of the current Vista session thru the start menu and then when prompted for username and password enter the "Administrator" username and your password.

WARNING: YOU SHOULD NOT BE LOGGING IN WITH THIS ACCOUNT ALL THE TIME, IN FACT IT SHOULD BE DISABLED FOR SECURITY PURPOSES.

I have Windows XP Pro/Home currently Installed and i want to Install a version of Vista aswell. Can i install more than one Operating System.

WARNING: BACKUP ALL YOUR DATA BEFORE TRYING TO PARTITION OR DO ANYTHING TO A HARDRIVE DRIVE

Yes, this can be done but does take time and effort along with purchasing/allocating some software.

1. The first thing you want to do if you don't have multiple hard drives is to resize your current hard drive to let's say 50% its size.
2. To do this you will need a program such as partition magic 8. I have used it and it works very well.

3. The concept is basically the same for any partitioning program you first want to resize the drive to a certain percent. Then you will have "unallocated drive space" so let's say you you decided to resize your hard drive to 60% its size then you will have 40% "unallocated hard drive space". After you follow the steps Partition Magic 8 Performs.

4. So now you have 40% of your hard drives total disk space set aside for vista

5. Now insert the windows vista DVD and boot from it.

6. After setup copies several files you will have to click "advanced" to be able to see the partition you want vista installed on (obiously in our case here it will be the smaller one in GB's)

7. Choose that partition and click "next"

before you know it you will be dual booting with XP and Vista.

I have a dual boot setup with Vista and another Windows Based OS(XP, 98, 2000 etc) and i can't locate the boot.ini file to configure the boot options and what Operating System boots by default(first)

WARNING: BACKUP ALL DATA ON A HARD DRIVE BEFORE PROCEEDING AS YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN

Windows vista no longer uses the boot.ini file like most versions up to XP. The boot.ini file is now based on an executable. This can also be done by MSCONFIG command using the run command.

1. hold down the windows logo key on your keyboard and hit "R"

2. You will be at the "run" window there you want to type in "CMD" without quotes and press enter

3. at the black cmd windows type "bcdedit" without quotes. Now you might get a message that says
"The boot configuration data store could not be opened.
Access is denied." In this case you will have to follow the steps above to login as administrator using the administrator account itself.

4. Now to work bcdedit you should look at the help instructions. To get help for bcdedit just type in "bcdedit /?" at the command prompt window. To get help on a part of bcdedit you do "bcdedit /? enums" and it will provide you instructions on how to apply a certain setting.

Here you can configure if windows should wait 30 seconds at the dual boot screen etc. Which OS boots first etc

How do i disable the "Phishing Filter"?

1. Open up Internet Explorer

2. At the top right click the "tools" drop down arrow and select "Phishing Filter" and then choose "Phishing Filter Settings"

3. Now you should be at the advanced tab of internet options. You want to look for "security" header and then "Phishing Filter"

4. Here you can choose your options for the filter you can choose "Disable Phishing Filter" if you want to completely disable it and not get bothered by it.

5. Once you have done that click "pply" and then "OK" and you should be done.

My little contribution

Force Aero Glass in Vista 5744

*Thanks goes to genenio for finding this!*
»thetechportal.net/forums/index.p···opic=139

For all those who can`t get Aero working with build 5744

1 - Ensure that you have the following registry value set to :

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\Composition set to 1 (32-bit DWORD)

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM\CompositionPolicy set to 2 (32-bit DWORD)

NOTE: All I had to do is restart Vista and Aero Glass worked. The following was not needed *For my machine*.

2 - Restart DWM by opening a command prompt with administrative privileges :

- Type 'net stop uxsms'
- Then 'net start uxsms'

I think microsoft is more worried at this point with making vista "stable" and fixing the blue screens which bring back memories of windows 98.

I would say its safe to have these FAQ's since the final OS will be most likely like RC2

Does MS have a comparison guide for the different versions, like they do for XP? »www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/home···ng2.mspx

If not, it would be helpful in a faq.
