They need to use somewhat different frequencies. T-Mobile UMTS USA = 2100/1700MHz Cingular UMTS = 850MHz and 1900 MHz
GSM/UMTS phones exist using the following frequencies GSM: 850, 900, 1800, 1900 (and officially 450MHz in some countries) UMTS: 850, 900, 1900, 2100/1900MHz and 2100/1700MHz.
The 'primary' UMTS global frequency is 2100/1900MHz 850, 900, 1900 MHz is existing GSM (or cellular/PCS) frequencies. |

| 1800 MHz is used in GSM, but hasn't been set for UMTS 900 MHz has already been tested in Europe for UMTS. 850/1900 devices for UMTS already exist 2100/1900 devices for UMTS already exist 2100/1700 - new, but scheduled.
There's a lot of fragmentation going on. |
