The fact that he about faced is pretty good evidence that he wasn't paid off. If he'd gotten a big check he most likely would have stayed the course. I love how conspiracy theorists all think THEIR idea is the ONLY sane one, even though there are dozens of other humdrums explanations to be had that make a lot more sense.
