| reply to Dersgniw Re: [OOL] Boost is getting a free boost
Could the modem be maxing out at 2.6mbps? If it can handle 25mbps down, you would think it would handle 2.6 up.
At any rate, the 30/5 that is really 23/2.6 is an improvement from the 23/1.6 for the same price.
Unless they can show something over 4mbps upload, I think they are going to be in trouble if they advertise it as 30/5. That is too big a gap to just explain away - they may get away with it legally, but I think the consumer backlash will outweigh the benefit.
Why not call it 30/3 even though they are provisioning the modem at 30/5? When they can get over 3mbps consistently, they can call it 30/4, and when they are over 4mbps call it 30/5.
Or what the hell - why not just call it pretty much what it is: 25/3? -- NOTHING justifies terrorism. We don't negotiate with terrorists. Those that support terrorists are terrorists. |

4 edits | reply to jaa because they have that one line they could always use "up to" and think people won't notice as long as they advertise same or better speeds than Verizon. They are banking on the fact that people won't bother switching if speeds are close to "advertised" and don't have to be actual, and going for the knockout blow. The average person would not be as anal as we are. They always talk well when it comes to making things seem much better than they are and twisting perceptions in their favor, and they are very experienced in that, but fail miserably on backing them words up....trust me, I know.
It is obvious they are doing all they can (even if affects their network) besides actually upgrading infrastructure, to keep Verizon away. But if we do an actual head to head speed comparisons, FIOS is much closer to advertised speeds, and the fluctuation is much less drastic....
To add further, if you are on a problem node...well things will only get worse...nothing but the usual headaches. I will say it again as I have in the past, they couldn't get their 10/1 service back in the day working as it should what makes you think things will be different now, especially since they are rushing each upgrade to match verizon...where are the upgrades that go with that increase?
I remember the days of overcrowded nodes, and overutilized UBR's, where utilization was 90% or higher giving them huge headaches..and they still exist. Of course we could never admit any of it to all of you. I remember all this right before they began capping, where certain nodes were constanly going down or were down to a crawl and it took forever to figure out why, then when they knew, they took forever correcting the issue in splitting nodes and adding UBR's all because of cost. Why would things change now without the neccessary upgrades they need...and unless they do so, what do you think will happen? You'll be here every day complaining about the speeds you aren't getting. |

| reply to lowdownshame after restarting the modem, the service class name and max traffic rate for "Port80" disappeared and the increase from 2Mbit to 5Mbit took place. i have port 80/25 open. i am now testing to see if the 128k cap is placed at level other than the modem, but early predictions seem to indicate the cap is not there. i have not tested port 25 yet, but its my understanding that port is not speed-limited. -- S.C.P.D. 1 edit | reply to lowdownshame this is a port 80 test. pulling from another computer on verizon (via remote desktop) with 30/5 to mine on OOL 30/5. it appears there is no longer a port 80 cap, however, it appears the network needs some serious upgrading at this point. -- S.C.P.D. 2 edits | reply to Dersgniw Yes there is. Normally if you open the ports from the web interface, they will be listed following the BOOST stuff. Example from an old output:
docsQosMIB.1.2.2.4.2.2476.1 = [Octet-string] "OOL-BOOST-US" docsQosMIB.1.2.2.4.2.2476.2 = [Octet-string] "OOL-BOOST-US" docsQosMIB.1.2.2.4.2.2476.3 = [Octet-string] "OOL-BOOST-US" docsQosMIB.1.2.2.4.2.2477.1 = [Octet-string] "OOL-BOOST-DS" docsQosMIB.1.2.2.4.2.2477.2 = [Octet-string] "OOL-BOOST-DS" docsQosMIB.1.2.2.4.2.2477.3 = [Octet-string] "OOL-BOOST-DS" docsQosMIB.1.2.2.4.2.14533.1 = [Octet-string] "Port80-US" docsQosMIB.1.2.2.4.2.14533.2 = [Octet-string] "Port80-US" docsQosMIB.1.2.2.4.2.14533.3 = [Octet-string] "Port80-US" ... docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.2476.1 = [Gauge32] 2000000 docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.2476.2 = [Gauge32] 2000000 docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.2476.3 = [Gauge32] 2000000 docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.2477.1 = [Gauge32] 30000000 docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.2477.2 = [Gauge32] 30000000 docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.2477.3 = [Gauge32] 30000000 docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.14533.1 = [Gauge32] 128000 docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.14533.2 = [Gauge32] 128000 docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.14533.3 = [Gauge32] 128000 (Notice the 128,000 byte per second cap on outbound port 80!)
However, my port 80/25 interface isn't working on the Boost page, there's no mention of port 80 in my config, YET I have an uncapped, unfiltered outbound transfer on port 80 going at 2.6mbps! I have not tested port 25 yet

1 edit | reply to lowdownshame yes I get similar results @ 11:26 AM
20.893mbs downstrean 2.796mbs upstream
I agree with most of the above you have to give them some time to roll it out, and it was free, although I doubt it will get any better it still is a shared connection. at 11:00am my d/l is down to 2/3 its alledged up to value of 30 by 5PM-6PM it will be at 12. All acceptable numbers to CV. If I owned any cablevision stock I would sell it. In the long run I think verizon will chew them up and spit them out on Long Island. |

1 edit | reply to Irish Shark What's the current upstream channel spacing, symbol rate and modulation? Are they now using a 6MHz upstream channel with 64QAM Modulation? You really need a clean cable system for that. I'm on Comcast and were using a 16QAM 3.2 MHz upstream channel (2.56Msym) for 10.2Mbps per channel. 64QAM is going to have stricter signal level requirements. If your not seeing the 5mbps upload, maybe they have yet to switch the upstream modulation as each plant is certified to run 64QAM.
Congrats to you guys on Optimum On-line Boost! You have it made over there in Cablevision land. |
