[OOL] Boost is getting a free boost

i recieved this memo on the job this week and figured id share the info.

still no word on whether this will resolve any of the periodic evening slow-down issues throughout the system.
definitely seems as though CV is going chest to chest with verizons fios by going 30/5

How do you find out about that? I have not seen a post of anyone with the 30/5 service being capped.

Well, if they cap 30/2 then chances are high they will cap 30/5. They would need some pretty significant capacity additions to support a 5mbit up pipe with no capping even with DOCSIS 2.0.

Agreed. I was questioning the person who stated it as fact to find out the basis for his statement.

Always nice to get something extra at no cost. Will this do anything for download speeds? I really don't upload many files.

This does suggest we have FIOS to thank.

btw... I have never experienced any evening slowdowns or any for that matter since I went to Boost about 4 months ago. Perhaps my node is underutilized or I am just lucky.

This would be a nice change and hopefully fixes some problems at night for me as well. I can do a speedtest and get 22 down one time and then do it again and get 6 down. :-( Upload usually goes about 1.5 1.6ish

Orange County is usually rolled into all of NJ. It'll probably be like when a new channel is added. The new channel or in this case service upgrade occurs on the last day. I live in Matamoras, PA which shares a system with Warwick, NY and Montague, NJ.

I'm in Suffern in Rockland County (West of Westchester) and I'm serviced by the Mahwah NJ System (the other half of my town and the rest of Rockland is another CV system serviced I think from Westchester). I assume that I'll get my speed roll with NJ.

Ahh, I see. I just moved, but I think I'm still on the Warwick system as I'm only five minutes from Warwick even though I'm in NJ now.

Yes it boots that way but switches to a 2.0 channel. This was discussed a while back. Here is one post on it, though I think there were others.

I looked back at some other posts, it may be that they have been running at 10mbps on the upstream channels. I would assume though since Boost requires a Docsis 2.0 modem that they will run at 2.0 and above 10mbps as part of the upgrade but I have been wrong before.

Im gonna go out on a limb here and post the exact response I had received from Wilt on this several months back when I inquired...

Specifically:

Instrumentation and tool based; the QOS for the modems, Voice services, is
derived from Docsis 1.1 and that's currently all the number you're seeing
means.
BOOST is a separate channel and does run at DOCSIS 2.0 and has a certain
set of modems, like the Moto 5120, that are "cleared" for it--in other
words, 2.0 capable.
Some people are confusing BOOST and the new service level of OOL normal, so
that's part of it.
Some modems that we didn't "approve" for the 15meg service are actually
capable of coming close, running high 13s or low 14s, but close isn't what
we specified.
If performance of 14meg is good enough and you're happy--the editorial
voice here--with the modem then changing for 1 meg or so is up to the user,
but as far as specs go, we spec'd modems that would pass 15/2.

Re: [OOL] Boost is getting a free boost

What's the current upstream channel spacing, symbol rate and modulation? Are they now using a 6MHz upstream channel with 64QAM Modulation? You really need a clean cable system for that. I'm on Comcast and were using a 16QAM 3.2 MHz upstream channel (2.56Msym) for 10.2Mbps per channel. 64QAM is going to have stricter signal level requirements. If your not seeing the 5mbps upload, maybe they have yet to switch the upstream modulation as each plant is certified to run 64QAM.

Congrats to you guys on Optimum On-line Boost! You have it made over there in Cablevision land.

I still cannot get above 1950 range upload on my boost. Granted it is most likely plenty for me but if I'm paying for more I should get it. I may end up cancelling boost in a few weeks if things don't improve.

VZ FIOS 30/5 is faster than CV 30/5 will be since VZ feeds their customers at a speed that delivers 30/5 AFTER the TCP/IP overhead is deducted while CV just provides 30/5 and your actual speed is less since the overhead is counted as part of their 30/5 delivery (Look at the DSLREPORTS Speed Test Results to see the difference [it is the gray area on the right side of the speed bar).

That price is for 1 year FIOS contract and a combined phone service. I just got 20/5 for 39.95, normally 44.95.

No more slow news server.

I hope they lower it more, I'd like to get the 50/5 for $60.

That's not true. They provision higher on the download to compensate for overheard but not on upload. Look at the speed reports that you referenced and you'd see the download is usually around the "cap" but the upload is less.

As an example, here's my results just run on the NYC test. My tier is 20/5:
Download Speed: 20155 kbps (2519.4 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 4486 kbps (560.8 KB/sec transfer rate)

Well, it is good to have something free atleast they are not charging to boost up the boost service. Now, I'd rather have the 2mbps upload speed with no caps than having 5 mbps of upload with caps on ports. But, good to see that atleast they are trying to keep their (can I say valued?) customers.

I have Fios 30/5 and its killer, I would never go back to cablevision until their uptime improves. My friends Optonline died last night and is still down, no phone (voip), no internet .

The sad thing is.. there is no FIOS 30/5 package anymore.

Not sure how the FIOS 50 service compares to optonlines 30/5 pricing.

My OOL hasn't gone out for more than a couple hours in years. in fact, I don't think it's ever been out more than 2 hours. Last time i had any downtime was about 8 months ago for 30 minutes.

Free solution: lower the Verizon 50/5 to $44.95 and charge the $90 for 50/15 (max docsis upload 2.0 spec)!

But, this will bring retaliatory speed increases and lower prices from Verizon.

I am sure CV will now say, upload up to 5Mbps. Just as the dl is up to 30Mbps. Goodluck getting 30Mbps and 5Mbps though. FIOS must be having some impact though for CV to finally try and match VZ.

Re: [OOL] Boost is getting a free boost

I got the upgrade.

Brooklyn, NY, 11224.

I had to manually reset the modem. I reset it for the second time today. Low and behold!

C:\ipv6\bin>docsdiag -vv | grep 5000000
docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.2476.1 = [Gauge32] 5000000
docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.2476.2 = [Gauge32] 5000000
docsQosMIB.1.2.2.6.2.2476.3 = [Gauge32] 5000000

My question is why aren't we seeing higher speeds. I can't get a speed test to go above 2600kbps or so.

I will be trying a multithreaded upload. Lets see if I can saturate 5mb.

Dave

edit: Tried to saturate it with Bittorrent. 2.6mbit or so is the highest I can go. Tried to saturate it with ftp uploads. Same story.

FIOS users get 4500kbps on the 5mbit up tiers.. 2600kbps is not impressive at all for a supposedly 5mbit line.

Sorry, but this just doesn't cut the mustard as an "upgrade". Maybe if they do some REAL upgrades and spend some $.
