Help with Charter in Lawrenceville. IFITL Backup here I come

I posted this to a response on another thread but I think it deserves a posting the main forum page.

The speed issue in Lawrenceville happened since we had that nasty storm a few weeks ago. The tech I talked to said 9 out of 20 nodes in the area were hit. Ever since then speeds have been crap when peak usage times. I have been doing speed tests for a week and I can plainly see that when most folks are in bed, at work or in school I always get my full 10/1 speeds. You can actually see the speeds fall as kids get home from school and then it gets even worse when folks get home from work. The connection is crap until about 2-3am and then is fine till the cycle starts all over.

This is so obvious a bandwidth issue on the charter network and whatever that storm did it has knocked charter's capacity down tremendously.

All the techs want to do is run the stupid QCR report or when I tell them I am on OS X (I have PCs also and did run the QCR) I offer to run netstat. They always take this info and try to tell me I have to many ports listening. I am a sysadmin and I know my machines are clean. When I try to explain the pattern I have seen they have nothing to say. This is just ridiculous. The other thing is the upband is always pretty solid. Easily 1Mb all the time. The slowest I have seen it go in peak hrs is around 800Kb/s. You would think that will all my "open ports" my upband would affected the most. Come on Charter.

Right now I am down also. I will be ordering IFITL tomorrow to have as a backup I guess. If and when BS upgrades IFITL I will be jumping the Charter ship immediately.

Stop blaming my machines and fix the damn problem. A storm came in, you told me it took out almost have the nodes in the area, and the problem still persists. FIX IT. IT IS NOT MY PROBLEM, IT IS YOURS. The neighbor's have the same issue also. Try and blame that on me.

OK, sorry for the Rant. I am just tired of dealing with folks who do not know how to fix problems. This is the typical Charter way. When everything is smooth and there are no problems it is fine but when something breaks that can never figure out what the problem is for weeks at a time. They have been this way since they first turned on cable 8 years ago or whenever it was. I know it was not Charter then but they must have the same people doing the work because it has never changed.

Thanks for listening

John.

OK. Charter back up in Lawrenceville, if you can call it that. Here is the speed test that I will get at minimum 9200Kb/s tonight at 3am. These are just horrible speeds.

I can confirm that. Tech support either do not know or do not care if you call.

Try using this site, instead »www.speedtest.net/index.php it is also Speakeasy and will allow you to keep a record of your results. I am supposed to have 5/512, and have only had it a few days since I changed. After giving up, my DSL will be installed tommorrow, but I have been checking daily, anyway. When I return my equipment, I DO NOT plan to pay for full service, because I have not had full service.

I'm in Lawrenceville, and just checked my speed at Speakeasy... 189 kb download and 238 kb upload. Most weekends are getting as bad as evening primetime, even without storms passing through. And no, I don't have the 384 package.

Same for me in Sugar Hill (Gwinnett County), GA:
Last checked moments ago at: 217down/494up kbps

I am a 5Mb/s subscriber. Horrible service on the phone too. How can they be so incompetent not to see this when it is affecting so many users? Do they not monitor their network?

And one more question - why in the world do all Charter phone "support" personnel believe that an ICMP echo request is a direct measure of line speed? "Your Pings are good so it should be fine....blah blah blah". Obviously, their training is lacking from the top down.

I wish so bad that we had Comcast here. Southern Lawrenceville and a small part of northern Buford have Comcast. Comcast have $42.99 6Mb/512Kb, and they pretty much guarantee it. The people I know always have close to 6 or above in the speed test. And Comcast boost rocks. Comparing Charter's $1.39 stock with Comcast's $34.56, it shows the huge difference between them. BellSouth needs to get their act together and upgrade IFITL and provide TV.

Cool site. Dig the fancy interface. I ran a few from Atlanta, one from Dallas, Cali and London for the heck of it.

Ugh!

640 kb/s Down; 225 kb/s Up @ 23:10 on 8/20.

any techs happen to have any info?

if so, it would be greatly appreciated.

cheers,

Make sure to post back on what happens with tech. Hell, show him this thread and see what he says.

Thanks.

And lookie here folks. It is barely over 9am and my speeds are back to normal. I must have one of those croess platform worms that only abuses my connections when everyon else is on the network. Amazing how it spans Windows, OS X and Ubuntu. hehe

FIX IT CHARTER!

Hello All,
I live in Thomaston Ga and subscribe to the 10/1 package as well.I do not see the speeds I should see on even the 3 meg package.Charter has sent a tech out to my home to check signal levels only to tell me they were fine.He didn't seem to understand or care that I had a speed issue.I went to multiple speed test sites and showed him the results. His only comment was "You can't believe results from a speed test site"and that I was "asinine"
to order the 10/1 speed as I wouldn't see any where near those speeds.I see about 1200kbps down and 100 to 200 kbps up.On giganews I have seen from 10 connections about 3200 kpbs with occasional peaks to about 7000 kpbs.I'm tired of Charter techs wanting to pass it off as a PC issue. The results are the same with Mac OSX,linux and Windows XP with multiple RWIN values.
How can I escalate this up Charters food chain of tech support to get some answer's or a resolution to my problem.
They sent me a bill for 2 months of 10/1 service.I'm thinking of only sending them a check for 3/256 as I'm not even getting those speeds.
Thanks

This problem has to do with Gwinnett and surrounding area. Service use to be rock solid until a few weeks ago,in my case anyway. If your in Thomaston all bets are off. You may have other issues to deal with. The reason I say this is when I lived in Mcdonough,Ga Charter could never get my speeds to even 1/4 of what it should have been after a year of complaining I switched to BS DSL witch worked great. The one thing that I'm worried about, I can't link my slow speeds to a cert in date. My service used to be good now it sucks at prime time ONLY. It seemed to all start when the new speeds packages hit my area. If they have over sold the market here in GWINNETT we are DONE. It will take alot of time and more money from Charter to beff up bandwidth in the area. Just my 2 cents.

They got $20 billions debt. I do not believe that they had money to upgrade the current network. They just rolled out new speeds hopping that people are too dumb to notice. Their packages suck. Even if you had the speed advertised, they are still a bloody ripoff. $42.95 for 3Mb? Comcast has 6Mb for that. Still, if this is the case, they are liable for fraud charges. If they don't fix their network soon, we should start a class action law suit.

I can tell you the exact day (well not the exact date) but we had a super nasty storm in Lawrenceville and I am sure it was in the surrounding areas. It was really nasty and I was not able to get to my Cable modem to unplug fast enough. I made it to my AV Rack and Computer gear and the modem was last. It got zapped. I plugged in my backup modem and since then the speeds have sucked. Remember, I was even told by Charter that in my cable area (I am ssuming they meant the gwinnett area and surrounding) almost half the nodes where down that feed all of our modems. It was fine and then after the storm, BAM, it lacked the bandwidth to support our usage. It was about 3 weeks ago and about a month or so with having 10/1 being always fast and rock solid. I think the nodes have still not been repaired or if they were then they were done incorrectly. My issue is the upband is solid as always really and it has come in very useful for my job and I need to keep it. I am ordering IFITL for now unless I need to upload something then will switch to a different wireless router on Charter to do that.

Thanks for responding.

John.

Turned in my equipment and problems, today. I have new Direct TV and 3/384 DSL. At 7:10 in the evening, which is pretty much peak time here, I am getting 2966/266 at speakeasy, even testing while my son plays Halo in the other room. Not too shabby...
