[DIRECTV] TiVo being phased out from DirecTV?

I searched a little, but didn't find what I was looking for, so I'll ask it now:

Is DirecTV going to phase out TiVo from their services? I know DirecTV recently resigned TiVo on for another 3 years or something, but are they actively trying to get rid of TiVo?

DirecTV's DVR sucks so bad. We have both a TiVo and an R15 DirecTV DVR. We HATE the R15 and LOVE our TiVo, but I thought I heard a rumor DirecTV will eventually cancel TiVo services.

Please let me know what you've heard, etc. If DirecTV cancels TiVo service, I'll probably end up canceling DirecTV unless they make a magical comeback with a replacement to the R15.

Thanks in advance.

Yes the recent 3 year contract is just for support of current devices. DirecTV was or is hoping their R15 can replace Tivo. Hopefully they realize their mistake and bring Tivo back. An mpeg-4 capable HD version would be awesome.

Problem is, compared to Tivo, every other DVR sucks. I will fight tooth and nail to keep my DirecTivo for as long as possible.

Yeah a few months back I signed up for some deal where we got a second DVR - was supposed to be another Tivo, but the installer thought he was doing me a favor and gave me an R15, and at the time I didn't know any better. I HATE it. I haven't touched it in several months...

Is it true that you can't switch between tuners with the R15 like you can with the tivo while recording?

If both are recording YES but, there is no LIVE dual buffer like the Tivos have.

I got rid of my R15.

The installer came to my house and said "You are gonna love this".

I said "Oh yeah"? with excitement. "I already have one Tivo unit in my den"

He says "Oh, you already have Tivo?

"Yes" I say.

His reply? "Oh, you're gonna hate this!"

Sure enough after two days, I went and purchased an R10 and sold the R15.

WHAT A LOAD o CRAP.... I really need my DVR to suest stuff I never what to watch.

Or screw up "season ticket" because someone leaves of the NEW tag, or there is conflict with the first occurance (only with the new tag)

Plain and simple reason is why PAY for someone elses licence overhead... for no good reason.

DTV was the only thing really keepin TIVO alive... and no that is down the crapper... if TIVO itself is no mourning here.

In fact it was one a several reasons several years ago I moved from DTV to DISH.... FREE to USE DVR's (and 721 and earlier still are)

Die self serving marketing interest only (like AOLHELL pretending their interst is net providing) TIVO die... then all the others can pick up your silly frill BS without paying you, if they even wish to... there is nothin a TIVO can do that my DISH 721 can't I really give a crap about.

At this point, all "New" DVR Installs are getting R15-300's or above. DirecTV is still providing support for the Tivo's that are out in the market, and if it needs to be replaced (on a service call), you will probably get a refurbished R-10. As for plans to "cancel" Tivo services... the Tivo units connect to the same DVR server as the DirecTV DVR + does, and that is not supposed to change.

DirecTV is trying to get away from "3rd party" manufacturers on ALL their equipment (standard and High End) and is moving towards a more proprietary stance.

I'll be the first on this thread to tell you yet again; that feature can easily be disabled. See, the cool thing about a Tivo is that it will do all the fancy stuff, but if you want, it will be a digital VCR just like your 721.
Faulty guide information is the fault of whomever the provider has contracted to provide the information. Bad guide info will screw up any guide-based timers on any DVR. That's probably why you like your time-based timers on the 721. It's all about choice and you've obviously made yours which brings me to the question, why do you crap on all the Tivo threads?

Because you pay for that, for no real good reason.

Geee come summer things are reruns... feel I have noy missed anything kill the timer until September... other wise just how hard is that delete button to find???

Again while because of the everywhere lease/rental thing now (cable or sat) you are going to pay for USE of a DVR as a new/upgrade sub, but again so far as promised, but 510 and beyond and so far delivered on, the with DISH 501/8 and 721 they will be FREE to use forever (until they die) which is just like TIVO it is not YOUR LIFETIME subscription if you go that route but the UNIT's lifetime, and gain something MANY don't realize. You can't buy another box when it dies (or upgrade) and still have the same lifetime sub, unless out of desperation now that DTV has bailed on them that has changed.

I have five DirecTv Tivo's and will go to the grave to keep them. I have had no issues with them in the 3+ years that I have been on D*. I will leave D* if they force me to replace them.

Since DTivos have historically been MUCH lower in price than any Dish DVR, this isn't really a valid argument.
At any rate, I would rather buy technology that has more features than I need than to buy one that doesn't have enough features to suit my needs. Especially if the unit with more features costs less.
Again, personal choice and no cause for thread-crapping...

...and I left Dish Network because they refused to sell me a DVR(501)for $99, the new customer price. Instead, they asked me to pay almost 3 times more because I had been a customer for 3 years.
My first DirecTivo was $129. My second was $49. Add them together and it's still less than what Dish wanted for a 501.

Until you add up all those $6/mo you wouldn't be paying on the 501. (and still also for 508 or 721 as well)

And by the way that is funny how actually BOTH companies treat existing customers... I left DTV also because, they said I would have to buy a second dish and new receiver to get NASA TV which was then on a secondary bird.

When I called to disconnect, they said oh noon't go, we will give you all that... to late now dummies DISH dish is already going up.

Did you ever actuaslly tell DISH you would go if they didn't offer something, or just go?

I told them 3 times that not getting a discount on a 501 was a deal-breaker. I had one of the very buggy DishPlayer 7200s and I was tired of baby sitting it to get it to record. Two CSRs and a supervisor told me, in essence, buh-bye. I'm very glad they did. A friend got a 508 shortly after I made the switch so I was able to make a good comparison between it and the DTivo. The conclusion I came to was that the DTivo had the features I wanted and the 508 had a big bag of nothing.
That's just my opinion, of course...
