ide cable

is there a "proper" way to remove an ide cable?

I try pulling at the ends and kind of rocking it, but its stuck in there pretty good.

you should try to apply equal pressure through the width of the cable, and yes, some do require a bit of pulling. also, remember to pull straight back, that way you aren't fighting the connection in any way.

Good advice. I use my thumb and index finger and grasp the ribbon right against the connector and pull straight out. I've never broken a cable doing it this way. Many of the newer IDE ribbon cables have pull tabs at the connector, which make things a bit easier.
