shadowserver & filesharing

Does anyone know if there's any truth in the rumour that shadowserver are now monitoring filesharing networks.

I know they are monitoring and reporting the irc warez channels but some of the guys I go to school with are saying they now monitor filesharing as well.

Yes they do. I saw an email about it from someone in the efraud division.

Doesn't matter if they is or if they aint. Monitoring isnt illegal, filesharing is.

Filesharing isn't illegal, sharing copyrighted software, videos, illegal porn, etc. is.

Essentially correct but a bit nit-picky don't you think? Particularly when current estimates suggest that more than 90% of the material being traded on filesharing networks is done so without the permission of the copyright holder. But not to be out done, I will point out that there are some countries where even this is not illegal.

Far more worrying is security organizations, even ham-fisted amateurs like Shadowserver, getting involved with an emotive subject such as filesharing. The danger is that the general public will start to view them all with the same suspicion and distrust they do organizations like the RIAA/MPAA and those associated with them.

That can only help the bad guys.

I'd say unsubstantiated rumours are far more damning.

It worries me that people see filesharing as illegal, and spout garbage about what people might or might not be sharing.
Quit being sheep, dammit, there's a lot of good that comes from filesharing.

Hmm, wasn't that why the Internet was created? To share information? Files being made of information. Maybe it's a Word document, maybe it's a MP3,ISO or RAR archive. It's just 1's and 0's no matter what it is.

FYI, Torrents are used by many major sites to distribute perfectly legit software and files, such as most of the OSS community not using Sourceforge. Heck, my browser even has BitTorrent built-in. (opera 9)

Now, organizations, governments and corporations can argue all day what is legal or not, but the fact is...P2P is a joke when it comes to real file sharing. And I'd love to see "them" try to stop IRC/Usenet from doing it.

I'm more concerned about the NSA, and what the gov't here is doing to take away every last vestige of privacy we have, than I am shadowserver. Fortunatly, the rest of the world is getting pretty tired of the U.S.'s self-appointed "role" as NetCop.

I reckon that the 'ss' tag means you are one of them so I'm not surprised by your attitude. But you got to ask yourself why has this rumour suddenly appeared. No smoke without fire usually.

Blame the RIAA/MPAA mouth-organs for that if you like but you only have to look at what is being shared to realize that most of it shouldn't be there.

Who cares, I get whatever I want whenever I want it.

And nobody can change that, the Internet isn't the USA, it's global.

Police that.

It aint that great. I've trying to download a 200MB virtual appliance file from vmware using bittorrent and its taken nearly three days to reach 82.7% If that had been directly from the website it would have been done in a couple of hours.

The anti-piracy nuts aren't after 'normal people'. They are after anti-social louts like you who steal everything that isn't nailed down and then whine about your rights when you get caught.
