For those with lots of cash and are looking to quad-core, CEO Otellini said during today's Q2 '06 earnings call that they've been able to pull Kentsfield into Q4 of this year.
I don't think quad core will be much good unless they increase the bandwidth of the FSB to match. quad core cpu + quad channel FSB will be the ticket for me.

Intel also previously said they would release a 3.2 GHz Core 2 Extreme by year's end.

What are you doing on your Kentsfield? Burn some DVDs or play BF2? I'm pretty sure 4 cores isn't really going to matter... Unless you're doing heavy database/server stuff I think you should save your money and buy a Conroe.

said by Carbon Unit See Profile :

The conroe will be short lived because the Quad core will carry Intel into 2009(Intel Yorkfield 8 core 4x Wolfdale chips), Im just going to wait for the Kentsfield, they plan on enabling HT on this cpu, plus Intel is planing to roll out the quad core with the release of Vista, Im also interested in the 1333mhz quad pumped FSB
I suspect there's a reason Intel and Microsoft are releasing there new products at the same time, it will probably be the best possible solution for running Vista, sure you could probably run Vista on a Pentium 3, but back when XP was released I first ran it on a AMD K6III 550Mhz, and the performance was sub-par

I'm not upgrading until next year, and when I do, it's going to be a complete and top of the line one. I suspect by then AMD will have or will be back on top. I have to agree with the "screw brand loyalty" sentiment, unless you have a particularly good support experience with a company - and with processors you usually get a good one and keep it, or RMA it back to whoever sold it to you the first week it's in your hands, so I'm not too sure it applies.

Intel has been better then amd for a long time; just lacking the press. With amd you can only use DDR one at 400 were Intel supports DDR 2 667. The cache size on the amd chip is much smaller and you get a lot of cache misses. The Core Duo has 2 x 1 MB in the laptop and 2 x 2 MB cache in the desktop. The Core DUO supports cache sharing between cores of the 2MB, as I am sure the new Core 2 DUO will probably do as well.

It is nice to see the press is finally crawling out from under the rock and giving credit were credit is duo.

Is the "Core 2 Duo" based on the same architecture as the "Core Duo" currently found in laptops?
Completely different, from both a performance and a technical standpoint.

When can we expect to see laptops with the new Intel chips? That is.. aside from Apple Powerbooks . Also.. how come Apple Powerbooks can already be Core Duo equipped when Core Duo is just being launched now?
I believe the 27th is the debut/launch for the Core 2 Duo desktop chips; at the Intel Corporate Headquarters.

Core Duo has been in PC based laptops since their release early this year January 06. Ccallana is correct the Apple and PC based laptops have “Core Duo” 1st generation chips, and now “Core “2” Duo” is the second generation chip based on the Merom & Conroe processors . The laptop version "Merom" should be launched later this year in August. Core Duo first came out in PC based laptops before Apple released the Intel chip inside their devices.

Its simple, do the math, Intels $300 cpu will out perform AMDs $1000 cpu, I dont feel very charitable now so I will go with the intel chip

I have no idea why people are arguing over this stuff. I have no love for Intel or AMD. I buy what gives me the best speed for the money, and I always have. Satan could put out a processor and I'd buy it if it was fast and cheap.

I've used AMD for about 4 years now. Anyone who built their own system was foolish not to.

When I build my new system in January I'll be using a Core 2 Duo

Its a back and forth thing, intel for a while then AMD, although AMDs next round is supposed to be 3.0ghz, so we'll see what happens.

The greatest benefit to the new Intel chip, could be simply getting rid of the 'Fanboy' thing that has taken a ride to a level that's not conducive to reality and has tended to spark insults, along with peer pressure buying.

Both AMD and Intel have a firm niche, though it's good to see Intel getting back in the seat. Just hope there is no DRM involved. In latter years both AMD and Intel seem to find 'Spyware' on a chip acceptable.

We certainly have come a long way from 8086 at the consumer level and the $3,000+ price tab.

I still remember buying a 1meg memory chip for $280.00 and the stella 286 Rig that I bought a 4meg stick for, almost $400.00. 386 was a speed demon..Lol One could tweak a lot with that setup. 486 was a major move up and Pent 111 was the Cats A**, still a good chip [1g] for older software. Still run a 486DX100. Still run two AMD's, one from the early days 1g Athy.

AMD came a long and forced CPU prices down, for that we can be most thankful.

We are getting spoiled with price and technological advances, pretty nice!
