| Core 2 Duo: Intel Goes for the Jugular
The headline is borrowed from Extremetech. The Intel NDA expired today at 9 PM PST and official reviews are pouring out. The release is still on the 27th, although if you have lots of cash, you can buy an X6800 today.

| Fascinating, I may actually consider going Intel with my next round of upgrades later this year. If so, it'll be the first time I'll have bought an Intel CPU since 1997. -- "I'll follow the law until it's just stupid." -Ted Nugent |

Consider that a $220 Core 2 Duo E6400 runing at 2.13GHz keeps pace with a $1000 Athlon FX-62 running at 2.8GHz, then that the flagship Core 2 Duo X6800 runs 2.93GHz, and you will begin to understand what the hype surrounding the Core 2 Duo has been about. As I said before, AMD is screwed!! |

Unfortunately they don't have anything in the pipeline that's going to beat this in a next year.
The P4 has sucked for 5 years now. AMD should have been on top by now as they have beaten them in price and performance nearly the entire time. Now Intel has a better performing chip, and the market lead.
It does suck for AMD. |

1 edit | reply to BA Wow - I can finally show my face around here without getting beat up Luckily I still have a job.... and hopefully this product launch can help turn around some recent mis-steps by Intel.
There is still alot of work to do and ground to make up - but when I hear some of the die-hard AMD fans thinking of switching, Intel must have done something right
Some quotes from the major review sites below. My favorite one: But this is where their (AMDs) little parade comes to a screeching halt why? Because in the most simplistic of terms, Conroe (dubbed Core 2 Duo) kicks the Athlon64 right in the balls and doesnt look back. from GD Hardware. ===== Tom's Hardware: Core 2 Duo Is the new king So fasten your seatbelts, because Core 2 Duo is the new high-flyer. Core 2 Duo shall become the undisputed leader in performance and performance per Watt As soon as Core 2 Duo hits the market, it will outperform the complete Athlon 64 family (X2 and FX) in all areas, including gaming, where AMD has traditionally been very strong ===== Anandtech You're instead looking at the most impressive piece of silicon the world has ever seen, at the fastest desktop processor we've ever tested. What you're looking at is Conroe and today is its birthday. Intel's Core 2 Extreme X6800 didn't lose a single benchmark in our comparison, not a single one. Compared to AMD's Athlon 64 the situation gets a lot more competitive, but AMD still doesn't stand a chance. ===== More from GD Hardware Make no mistake about it, they have unleashed a series of new processors that are going to make AMDs life really uncomfortable for the foreseeable future. AM2 should be called AMwho? A band-aid fix at best, AMDs current crop of CPUs simply cant compete with Core 2 Duo when you consider theyre priced about the same. Kudos to Intel for getting it right and not just baby-stepping us into the next realm of performance but really handing AMD its ass on a silver platter. Were performance nuts around here and appreciate the school-of-hard-knocks Intel has gone through with P4. Its nice to see AMD eat some crow for awhile. ===== Sharky Extreme The launch of the Core 2 processor line has hit the market with a bang, and offers up an incredible combination of performance and value, coupled with low heat and power specifications. These processors are so good, that it's difficult to highlight any real negatives. The Core 2 Extreme and Duo processors offer record-breaking performance, industry leading power specs, and are priced so that virtually anyone can afford one. It has been a long time since we have seen a processor walk over the competition like this, and we should all thank AMD for bringing out the very best from Intel, as well as proving that competition does indeed work. =====
All in all a good day for Intel - even during the turmoil going on inside the company. |

| reply to BA The extreme 6800 edition is the only one that is can be over-clocked according to some reviews (multiplier can be easily altered on that chip..the others can't)..
Low budget modders need not apply...that chip is around $1000! (in large quantities) Hate to see the retail price. The lower chips look very interesting. Been pondering an upgrade to a dual core Athlon in the near future, but will hold off now and see what the retail on these chips will be.
The DRM question from above is a very good question. Will be interesting to see the answer to that... |

| reply to BA All I have to say is this kind of advancement is what happens when there is *true* competition. Even if AMD loses the performance crown for a year or two, they have my gratitude for getting Intel off their collective ass and actually coming up with a significant advancement. So - it seems you are writing them off because of 1 year....? Wow - a wee bit extreme. the reason AMD is not on "top" is because people didn't buy them in enough numbers..
I say again - and will continue to say it - they will have something back. It took Intel 5 YEARS to get back the performance crown... You want AMD to take it back in less than a year it seems...
BTW - no matter what - BOTH companies make CPU's that are far faster than 95% of the home users need and probably close to 85% of the business desktops need. I can still build a PC for my use and make it last for 3-5 years with a current AMD CPU. Just becuase Intel has the "crown" - does not mean no one will buy them... -- Brian
