| Fireworks affects my wireless link !!!
Happy Canada Day to all Canadian WISPs. Go watch the beautiful fireworks tonight.
Usually I suggest people check simple causes first before making wild guesses about what is affecting their wireless link. However, there is an IT guy who swore that fireworks takes down his "wireless" link. Needless to say I argued a lot with him and even placed a bet.
It turns out they had installed a very expensive free-space-optics + 60Ghz PtP link from a downtown building across Ottawa river where they launch fireworks every year on July 1 around 10PM and a few other occasions. |

It's illegal to set of fireworks (but not sell/buy them) this year in North Texas because we're in such a severe drought. I'm hoping we don't wake up on the 5th to find half the county burned... |

Actually went out fishing yesterday and dodged rain all day long, and it's been raining everday since.
What is it exactly that affects the signal? The smoke? Flames? |

| reply to lutful We noticed the same thing a few years ago. As soon as the fireworks started going off, our monitoring started paging us. We only were monitoring 5.8GHz links at the time so I don't know what frequencies are effected or why. -- Comtrain Certified Tower Climber |

| I can now confirm first-hand that fireworks affects LED-based infrared FSO (free-space-optics) links.
Most fireworks particles contain burning metals like magnesium, tin, etc. So if the PtP beam went straight through the bursts, there could be slight increase in packet loss for a few minutes.
But RF links should otherwise keep working. It seems that their 60Ghz FSO-backup did not kick in due to slow response of standard spanning tree algorithm. |
