25 to 50%?!

Wow, it only goes to show that people will not do their homework. How much you want to bet that a fair amount of the people without HD service are under the impression that the TV makes everything HD no matter what the signal?

I'm still waiting. My current set is nearing 4 years old, so I'm not in a hurry, but when I do buy something to replace it, it will be HD. In the mean time, I might tinker with a cheaper (lots cheaper, actually) HD TV card for my computer. My current TV card is showing its age.

You do realize you can get +50" widescreen HD RPTV's for ~$900, right? These also include an ATSC tuner so you get just get an antenna and watch DTV OTA for free.

I'd rather spend that $900 on upgrading my PC. I still watch a 4 year old 27" RCA with a curved tube.

Heck my largest TV is an 20 year old 19". Forget the cost of the TV, I am not willing to spend $60-100 per month for programming. I just have $12 basic cable and my $12 Tivo, and there is always something to watch. I know I'm in the minority though.

And you do realize that an HD tv card can be found for $74.99 right?

I've got a relative with an HD capable big screen TV who doesn't have HD enabled because of hatred of the cable company and refusal to pay the extra money per month to get the IO upgrade (plus the monthly cost for five cable boxes so that all the TV's can pick up the IO signal) that Cablevision requires to get the HD signal.

So he/she spent the money on an HDTV set for what exactly?

I can pick up HD channels without cablevision IO packages. I get HD ABC, CBS, NCB, FOX, and WB (however for some reason I can't get ESPN HD). My TV has the built in tuner and receiver.

I jsut plugged it in and hit auto program. My channels are different then the cablevision line-up. WB is 74-16 and FOX is 101-705.

Not sure why I can't find ESPN and YES in HD. Might have to actually spend $10 for IO package.

You can't watch TV with just a TV card, you also need a computer. I see your point though.

I used my computer (with a 20" monitor) to watch TV for a while, but I got sick of it real fast. It's no fun sitting at a desk to watch TV, and it's just nice having a dedicated TV. So I got a 32" widescreen CRT HDTV for dirt cheap and I couldn't be happier. Well, I'd be happier if there was more HD content and when (or if) the transition from analog to digital ever finally completes.

Yes, I am aware of that. In fact, you can find ATSC STB used for under $100. But what good is the tuner without a decently-sized display to enjoy all of that HDTV goodness?

When I'm sitting a mere foot away from the monitor, 19"-21" is all that is needed.

As far as watching TV on the PC, My computer chair is as confortable as my sofa. I very rarely venture downstairs to watch tv. I do it all from the PC, but I do understand that it's not for everyone.

It is the same as the person who buys a high quality sound system and then only listens to a MP3 on it.

Most will say that's nice, but take no effort to set up a system themselves.
HDTV falls in to the same category, I think it is great, most people have to many other things in there life to give a crap.
Tv for them is something you fall asleep to.

While I have a bigger TC - 32 or 37 inch in the living room and I get more than the basic package from Dish I can't even BEGIN to think of spending on a new TV (current on is less than 6 years old) AND paying out the nose fro what littel HD programming there is. Not to mention my eyes are bad enough I probably could not tell. I would rather be able to save a few bucks and invest it in a 529 college plan for my 2 kids and our Roth's...

that's BASIC basic, not expanded basic
Only like 15 channels, no ESPN

Just a step above over the air, but better reception and a couple extra decent channels .

Yup likewise. If you do your due diligence on the tuners and buy the right HD set you can often get the "broadcast" type of channels in HD over cable.
Cablevision's "digital packages" tend to be extremely over priced.
Cablevision seems to encrypt espn HD, TNT HD, Yes HD etc. But you can and I do, receive the HD versions of 2, 4, 5, 7, 9 PBS.
No way I want "IO Silver" because it costs another $30.00 or so per month, then there is the digital cablebox fee etc. And I have no need of the "music" and I dropped HBO as being too old and repetitive long ago.
In case anyone asks I AM paying for full basic + family packages. ANd yes I did check it was OK to use my own tuner as I do.
Perhaps also many of the HD TV sets are being set up to receive the broadcast channels, for free, OTA?

So what does the expanded basic run? I'll bet it's lower than what I'm paying. ($55!)
Plus, I'm sure the lower cost of living would make it worthwhile...

I also use the Fusion (Dvico) card for around $100.00 AND you get digital recording capability and an electronic guide all w/o paying a TIVO type fee.

Expanded basic runs around $46 I think before taxes. But it's impossible to tell on the website without talking to an agent. Gotta love Charter.
