2 Africas

I wonder how this breaks down between the politically "free-er" countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Kenya and Zambia and the rest of the continent.

Another point to consider... South Africa happens to be the country where Thawte, Inc. (the #2 security certificate vendor) is headquartered. Things can't be that bad!

Re: 2 Africas

There was an article not to long ago (I think it was here on BBR) and a user in South Africa calculated that for a 1GB file it was cheaper and faster (if he didn't stay overnight) to fly to Hong Kong, visit an internet cafe, download the file, burn it to DVD, and then fly home again.

In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice there is.

Here are some of the residential prices from one South African DSL provider. I am assuming that like with US providers, the actual cost is probably higher due to hidden fees and such.

Installation Fee for all services w/ VAT: 404.40 South African Rand = $62.38.

Monthly Fee for 1Mbps service w/ VAT: 680.00 South African Rand = $105.

Monthly fee for 512kbps w/ VAT: 477.00 South African Rand = $73.65.

Monthly fee for 384kbps w/ VAT: 359.00 South African Rand = $55.43.

Monthly fee for 192kbps w/ VAT: 270.00 South African Rand = $41.69.

These are high prices even by USA standards, but there must be people in South Africa who can afford those prices or else they would not be charging them.

As for the DVD/flying to Hong Kong story, I did some calculations assuming I was using the 1Mbps service above. 1GB is 8000mbits. It would take a little over 2 hours to download 1GB. Unless it took more than 30 days to do the download, the costs (including installation) would be about $170.

According to Cathay Pacific's website, the cost of flying round trip from Johannesburg to Hong Kong is 13159 South African Rand, or about $2028.37. Of course, this assumes a trip leaving this Saturday and returning on Tuesday, but I think the premise of that original article is way off.

What are the fees for going beyond $CAP amount?
