Your System - May 2006

Post your system specs if you've built/bought a new system during the month of May.

If you've changed your system, put "ADDED" next to the new component(s).

If you haven't changed anything - don't post!

64MB Intel Graphics
Windows XP Professional "Custom Edition"
Intergrated wireless a/b/g

The memory boost and the hdd speed increase really helped my lappy on gaming performance, as well as load times in counterstrike / utk4 / and appz like photoshop.

Here's a triple upgrade .

Laptop (Dell Inspiron E1705):

Intel Core Duo T2400 (1.83 GHz)
1 GB (512x2) Hynix PC-4200 (533) DDR2 *ADDED* 2 GB (1x2) G.Skill PC-5300 (667) DDR2
nVidia GeForce Go 7800
100 GB 7200 RPM SATA HD
Intel wireless card
Combo CD burner/DVD-ROM
WinXP Home

Old gaming/Linux experimenting/folding/spare computer:

Intel Pentium III 933 MHz
Asus CUV4X
160 MB Infineon RAM (128 MB PC133, 32 MB PC100, all at CAS2, 133 MHz) *ADDED* 512 MB (256x2) PQI PC133, CAS2 (only cost $28 or so a stick )
nVidia Vanta, 16 MB, AGP (still looking for a replacement )
13 GB IBM Deskstar
7.5 GB WD Spartan
8x4x32 Creative CD burner
Generic 300w PSU
WinXP Pro, Red Hat 7.2, Win98SE (soon)

Main machine:

AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (normally @ 2.65 GHz, temp. @ 2.2)
DFI LAN Party Ultra-D, modded to SLi, using Vantec Iceberq for chipset cooling
2 GB (1x2) Crucial Ballistix PC4000 DDR *Possibly replacing*
nVidia GeForce 7800 GTX, 256 MB *ADDED* Copper OCZ BGA heatsinks for rear RAM chips
74 GB WD Raptor
250 GB Maxtor DiamondMax 10 (SATA)
Pioneer DVR-109 DVD burner
Samsung DVD-ROM
500w Fortron Blue Storm PSU
WinXP Pro, WinXP x64

I'm currently having some issues with the new memory in the laptop. The BIOS says it's running at DDR2-667 speeds, and CPU-Z reports it as being in dual channel, but CPU-Z also reports the FSB:DRAM ratio as being 1:2 and memory bandwidth benchmarks with both Everest and Sandra show results comparable to a single channel setup (below 4 GB/sec). I'm going to try flashing the new Dell BIOS tomorrow to see if it'll help clear it up. Other than that, it seems to work great. Battery life seems identical to the original Hynix, and heat is okay.

As for my desktop, my second set of Ballistix is dying (first set crapped out in October, after 3 months of usage). With this set, I ran it below the recommended voltage due to heat and stability issues. They lasted this far but are beginning to show errors in Memtest86+ fairly quickly. Errors still show up at speeds not much higher than PC3200. I guess that's why Crucial discontinued the 1 GB PC4000 modules. If I can return them, I may get some OCZ instead. I have the memory in the orange slots, I may try the yellow ones first before I make arrangements for an RMA.

Here's my updates. I'll refer to my previous post to cut down on space.

P3 machine from above:

nVidia Vanta, 16 MB, AGP *ADDED* ATi Radeon 9500 Pro

A64 machine from above:

2 GB (1x2) Crucial Ballistix PC4000 DDR *Temp addition* 1 GB (512x2) Kingston HyperX PC3200

Machine that the parts are being borrowed from :

AMD Athlon XP 2500+ @ 2.3 GHz (200x11.5, 1.75v)
Abit NF7-S w/DFI nF2 Infinity northbridge cooler and 50mm fan taped on top
1 GB (512x2) Kingston HyperX PC3200
80 GB Samsung Spinpoint (SATA)
Pioneer DVD-120 DVD-ROM
ATi Radeon 9500 Pro *Adding shortly* ATi Radeon 9800 Pro (from eBay)
Lian-Li PC-7 case (really awesome case, try a Lian-Li sometime )
Antec TruePower 430w PSU
Thermalright ALX-800 heatsink w/high speed Sunon fan

I chatted with Crucial and they said they would replace my PC4000 with a new batch that they will begin selling shortly (Micron -5B F chips perhaps?). Those should come in sometime next week. For now, I'm using my XP machine's PC3200. Stuff can't overclock worth crap (Winbond CH-5 chips) for some reason so I'm leaving everything at stock speeds for now.

let's see here. I just built most of a new new rig, and traded my old stuff for a lappy!

Desktop:
Athlon X2 4200+ watercooled overclocked to 255x11 *added*
MSI K8N Diamond Plus *added*
2x BFG 7800GT's *added*
2x1024 OCZ PC4000 EB Plats
250gb Maxtor DMax10 16mb cache sata w/ncq
200gb Maxtor DMax10 16mb cache sata w/ncq
Plextor 716SA DVD+/-R DL Sata
OCZ 700watt Gamer Xtreme PSU *added*
Audigy 2 Value souncard
Dell 1907FP 19" LCD Monitor *added*

Lappy:
Dell XPS M140
1.73GHz Pentium - M
1GB DDR2 533MHz, 2 DIMMS
4 USB 2.0 ports
5 in 1 memory card reader
One firewire port
Audio in (Mic), out
VGA connection
RJ-45 Ethernet
RJ-11 Modem
S-Video
One ExpressCard slot
14.1 (wide) WXGA 1280x800 resolution (TrueLife option)
Intel Media Accelerator 900 with up to 128MB shared

The Desktop as we can tell kicks ass. I just can't say enough about the hardware I put togther. The X24200+ speaks for itself. The MSI diamond is just great! I had a DFI SLI-DR before this, and I am not remorse at all to get the MSI. It overclocks just as well for my needs, and has great spacing between the vid cards and allows me the pci slot at the bottom for the soundcard and has 2x 16x pci-e lanes for the 7800gt's. Not needed, but nice to have. Then the LCD contrary to personal reviews on cnet and other sites, is great. I love it and bought it on eBay for $250 shipped! Then to round it off the PSU is top notch. I replaced a 600watt OCZ powerstream which I loved, but this psu is a killer! My review is here

Then the lappy is just great. Typing on it right now. Computes pi to 1m places in 42 seconds! The screen is only 14" but widescreen so it still fits a lot onscreen. No it is not a gaming lappy, but for everything else does well. I even like the fact I can spend more time with the family or watch tv while still being able to surf the internet! It is quiet as a whisper, and doesn't get to hot. All this in a package light enough to tote around.

I built a new rig for gaming for myself:

DFI LanParty nF4 SLI DR - 704-2bt bios
3700 San Diego KAB1E 0607BPAW – 2.65 GHz (10x265 MHz – HTT 3 – vcore 1.41 volt)
eVGA 7900 GTX (673/857)
2 GB OCZ Platinum EB PC4000 (OCZ5002048EBPE-K) – running 1:1 - CAS 3, 3, 3, 8 at 1T - 2.7 vdimm
Thermaltake Venus 12 HSF - 32c idle, 43c load (at 2,900 RPM)
2 WD 36 GB Raptors in RAID 0 - SATA 1 and 2
Sony DVD ROM
Audigy 2 value
OCZ Powerstream 520 Watt PSU
Black Thermaltake Tsunami window case

I've had it stable in Windows at 275 MHz with these settings (passed 6 1/2 hours of Memtest and 2 hours of Prime) but I get video errors in 3D Mark.

The LanParty is one sweet board.
