| Fiber in the Dorms
Apparently, in my dorm room at GW I'll need a media converter to convert from fiber to ethernet for my computer. This is what they say I need to borrow from them to get it working:

Is that just a media converter? I'm just wondering, but why would they have fiber runs to each dorm room for each computer instead of copper? |

| Yes that is a Fiber to Ethernet convertor. As to why they dont just run fiber to a central switch and cat5 to the dorms is a good question. Thats how they designed their network for some reason... The question... Do they charge you to rent the convertor in addition to paying for access ??

Peabody, MA | No, I'm pretty sure it's free to rent for the year. But I know that if you break it or don't return it with all the wires it came with, they charge you. |

Ok.. I was thinking it might be a way to get more money out of you but if its free I would have to probably agree with the post in the other thread regarding this. The university may be "thinking ahead" and spending the money now just to be ready for new technology in the future or they may be a "guinie pig" and have a grant for testing  It is common for universities to be the first people to test and implement new designs after all  I cant speak "authoritative" on that though as I only deal primarily with Hosting networks in colo's and never have dealt with a Univ network. I just like to read on some of they stuff they are doing.

All new GWU building buildings use fiber and media converters. Btw, the media converters they use seem to die frequently.
