[Streamyx] problem with Linksys ADSL2 + streamyx

I was using Aztech DSL Turbo 900 modem ans started having problems connecting about 4 weeks ago. Problem is that it takes 30-40 minutes before the DSL connection get sconnected - link light flashes for 30-40 minutes before it gets steady.
Reported to Streamyx and after couple of weeks and visits they replaced all lines from exchange to DP.
I still have problems and they advised to change modem.
I bought Linksys ADSL2MUE modem (using the same eth cable to PC)and tried to connect but have problems. When I called up Streamyx they said I cannot use this modem as I am less than 5km from the exchange and advised me to buy Aztech 600.

I configured PPPoE VPI=0, VCI=35, enabled keepalive, enabled DHCP. DSL light flashes but doesn't connect. Log shows as 'DSL provider down'.

Is it true I cannot use this modem ?
If it can be used can someone provide a working configuration ?
I am on RM44/ a month subscription.
Many thanks for any help.

Yup, Linksys ADSL2 + does has the connection problem which I encoutered early. I brought back this modem to the shop that I purchased from, the shop owner told me some DSLAMs from TMNut do have compatiblilities problem with Linksys ADSL2 +.

So I ended up exchange with Aztech ADSL Modem with ADSL2+ ready, I think the model is this

From that day I installed Aztech modem onward, I never have encoutered any DC or DSL light blinks till now.

Just my persenal experince on Linksys ADSL2 +.

I think that the Linksys ADSL2MUE modem does not have the option to force it to sync to normal ADSL modulation. Maybe the modem just keeps trying to handshake with ADSL2 modulation, hence the DSL light keeps blinking without being permanently on. It could also be that some of the equipments are not really compatible with the chipset that the Linksys modem has. If you say that you're using the Aztech DSL Turbo 900 before this, very likely you could be on a Lucent DSLAM which is a very old and obsolete equipment.

Another thing is, could it be your Streamyx port is faulty or it hung ? Did the technicians try to reset the port for you or change to another new port ? They should have tried with their own modem when they visited your house to confirm whether the port is working or not. If their modem is able to have a stable DSL light and you can login to Streamyx using their modem, then the port is fine.

Maybe your Aztech Turbo 900 is starting to fail after so many years serving you. Just check on this few things to confirm what is the real problem, either its on your end or Telekom end. Keep us updated on the results and we'll try our best to help you out.

I'm using the ADSL2MUE modem without any trouble here.

I'm at Kelana Jaya.

Update on my problem.
I called the shop where I bought the modem and explained my problem. The manager said I can replace it with a Aztech 600E if I wanted. He offered to test it at his shop to prove there was no problem connecting to Streamyx.

I then called Streamyx and the supervisor said if the modem can connect to Streamyx at the shop but not at my home then it was a problem with my line and he would send round a technician to the house.

I took it to the shop and they connected to Streamyx with no problem. I brought it back and after dinner tried it again. This time I got a steady DSL light. I then plugged my old Aztech DSL Turbo and got a steady link light as well and it is now working like how it used to work before all this trouble started. Tried swiching the modem on & off several times and the DSL link comes up within 10-15 seconds.

I have been given conflicting information by Streamyx - first saying that my modem was old and needs to be replaced - then saying that the Linksys ADSL2MUE cannot be used - then saying that if it worked in the shop then it should work at my house.
I just spent RM140 for nothing based on Streamyx insistance that my modem was faulty.
I just hope my line is back to normal.

On another note, when I connect my Linksys - I get a PPP authentication error - though I have configured my userid/pwd in the setup menu under PPP0E.

Can someone advise me how to setup the user authentication ?
Will it still be the same as I have it now - where I go to Start/Connect To/Streamyx in Windows to activate the Internet connection ?

thanks for all the replies to my problem.

I am having the same problem with my zyxel 660R, can't sync with the dslam but OK when I brought it to test in the shop. I can only use it after forcing it to use gLite mode. Am I allow to complain such situation to TMnet?

mohanna : Maybe the problem is because the port hang or faulty.. they may have just reset the port for you at Telekom's side or got someone to change to another port ? There can be many factors when this kind of problems arises. For connecting to Streamyx, since you have already configure your userid/pwd under PPPoE, you do not have to use the normal Start/Connect To/Streamyx like before when you were using the DSL 900 Turbo. Just check under the Status menu in the Linksys modem to make sure that the connection is stated CONNECTED.

susuwatari : You're only able to use G.lite mode ? What bout G.dmt ? I think usually they won't accept this kind of report since you're able to connect to Streamyx albeit with a different modulation. However, you can give it a shot to see what they can do for you..

I also use ADSL2MUE-SG in bridge mode, and it doesn't really has problems. I think the problems lies at the DSLAM, because the DSL light should be still be connected even if VPI/VCI values are wrong.

compatibility issue should be monitored by shop vendors and exchange if problem arise
coz you can't expect TMNUT to change your port or replace the DSLAM slot if the Modem pick up popularity
hmmm.. but then again, maybe you can request them to change your port anyway ... to another slot of diff brand that might be compatible

susuwatari : If your modem only able to get 288kbps upload max, there must be something wrong either with your internal house wiring or Telekom's wire into your house. Are you able to paste the Attenuation and SNR Margin readings here for us to have a look ? It will give us a clearer picture of what's going on.

kiokyao, something wrong with the wiring cause my SNR only 5 or sometimes 4dB, my downlink normally stays between 10-15dB only. I could get 352 or 384kbps if using other modem.

What about the Attenuation ? Is it very high for upstream and downstream ? Did you try requesting Telekom to change the black cable coming from the pole outside into your house ?

reply to Mohanna
downlink attenuation is very high, 55 uplink can't remember. I never request to change, but they did come over to check my phone line. They just pick up the phone and listen without using any device, what an ancient way of diagnostic. I didn't know we can request them to change the line from pole to house, any special procedure?

You can try to call 100 and make a report, saying that whenever it rains, your DSL light will start blinking and the phone is noisy. Have you tried to have a look at the black wire coming from the pole, see whether the copper is covered with carbon. It should be shiny and not dull and black. Just check the inter-connection between the black wire and your house's internal phone wire.

I did in fact check the line, did a cleanup of the oxidized part also, downlink become more stable after that, but uplink still the same, terrible, just that, less disconnect. Can't call TMnet right now since nobody is at home during day time.

I am suspecting the internal wiring cause I am still using the concealed line.

If you can get some phone wire, then try connect it to the black wire from Telekom pole and the other end of the phone wire screw it to a phone junction box. Remember to disconnect your existing internal house phone wiring from this test connection between the black wire and new phone wire. Then plug it to your modem and observe the Attenuation and SNR Margin readings, see if there's any improvement and also try other modulations again to see if any of them works besides Glite.

Thanks for the suggestion, haven't think of testing in this way, great. Anyway, log another complain to streamyx see what rubbish they are going to reply, hopefully not DNS configuration again
