| Are you using SNMP with IOS?
If so,
1. Do you monitor (look at statistics) or manage (look at statistics and change configuration)?
2. What is your manager/monitor of choice?
3. What attributes do you monitor?
I've been happily using MRTG to keep an eye on interface statistics and CPU utilization. That's not to say that I know my network's full story, though. Seems there isn't enough time to learn all I can do... |

C871 has over 2000 MIB's, and the C1841 more than 5000 MIB's.

MIBs are the hierarchical structure for organizing all the data elements that a device maintains. OIDs are the elements themselves. |

Tim Those individual objects aren't MIBs. Each of those lines in your spreadsheet (ex.: 1.3.6.1.4.1.9.2.2.1.1.25.10) is an OID and the value held therein.
Most of those OIDs are of dubious usefulness. Thus, the question I originally asked: "Which attributes (OIDs) do you monitor?" |

tdoran Premium join:2003-09-27 Ridge, NY | reply to mr_dirt Since I work with code development, and IOS IPS, I most often "trap" (into the SYSLOG mostly) memory and CPU related, those are the two key areas, and where most of the troubble seems to start from.

| reply to mr_dirt I did once try getting into SNMP/OIDs when I was looking at monitoring programs but I just couldn't make any headway getting the OID information into the program I was trying
I'm sure I could get there in the end (monkeys, infinite time, typewriters and Shakespeare comes to mind) but I couldn't justify the time it would have taken. |

| I couldn't remember when I posted but as you asked I looked it up - it was Adventnet's ManageEngine OpManager.
I was primarily interested in general monitoring - availability, cpu, memory, traffic stats (yes I know, but I didn't know about netflow then). It did most of this out of the box but I didn't like the user interface.
The custom interest was to monitor the temperature of my 2800 routers as they were operating in quite a hot rack. I couldn't work out if there was an OID for it (this was where I started to struggle; there is hardly a wealth of helpful information about this on the Cisco site) but I know that it is monitored in the router because they have dual speed fans that run at full speed at temps over 32C. |

| reply to mr_dirt For what Phraxos and mr_dirt are probably interested in MRTG,RRDTOOL or Cacti are probably enough and they are FREE
Solarwinds is of course nice.................but not everyone wants to invest 400 dollars and more to get a simple graph or bandwidth
Cacti is excellent and you can find a bunch of templates in the somix website
Interesting site »www.somix.com/support/mrtg_repository.php |

| reply to mr_dirt The problem for me is that a lot of tools are linux based or have to be compiled to get a windows version.
I can never find time to get to grips with linux and I'm not a developer so compiling software is a complete pain in the arse.
For traffic analysis I have found nTop to be quite good but that is getting a bit OT. |

| reply to mr_dirt MRTG and therefore RRDTool are piece of cake through windows, you simply need to follow a simple list , no compilation here
In linux anyway most of these tools are simply compiled by typing a couple of commands, some tools are hard to figure out though but you should be safe with those two I mentioned |
