Unusual ping to toronto server

Hi.
Maybe you guys can explain this for me, i dont know that much about this stuff.
Recently my friends bought a game server and they were raving about their pings to it. Its hosted in toronto, and the ip is 66.55.159.42
But my ping is not like theirs. They would get pings of under 10 and i would get pings of under 40.
So i scratched my head, and decided to do a traceroute. I'm not 100% sure what it does, but i have an idea. and i started to see hostsmasks with nyc in it.
again i scratched my head.

my friends are all over ontario, and some of us get a fantastic ping, and some get an ok ping.
why would some of us be routed to new york??
i'm physically closer to toronto than most of my friends, and they get pings better than me.

I think the server is located in NJ, what ISP are you on?

I think you should get a Canadian host, maybe one that's on the TORIX network. You'll get something like 10 ping, that is if your ISP is on TORIX as well.

Also where are your friends located? Which ISP?

That explains it, Bell's routing is not very good, sometimes Toronto servers will go to Chicago and back.

They're not on TORIX either, which doesn't help at all. Not much you can do except change the host. It's not located in Canada anyway.

whats torix exactly? your saying the provider lied and the server isn't actually hosted in toronto?

It's hosted in Toronto, but Bell doesn't route at Toronto.

Sympatico rather prefers going from wherever you are, to Chicago, and then finally back to Toronto. It's not a direct path.

>whats torix exactly?

It is the network equivalent of a 1960s hippie commune. It operates out of a network hotel ( »www.151frontstreet.com ) where many networks and ISPs have a presence.

At 151, ISPs rent rack space and can then easily connect their routers to the large networks/transit providers. They can also connect to the ethernet of Torix which then allows them to connect to other ISPs. This way, they can reach the people they peer with through Torix for free, without feeding their data through commercial networks.

The IP address you provided 66.55.159.42 is in jersey city USA. It isn't in Toronto.

Depends on the network. Even if it's in the same building, that doesn't necessarily mean that it is hosted on same network.

An example of how TORIX would help.

Tracing route to 55.51.11.204.prioritycolo.com [204.11.51.55]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

Ok, 204.14.16.157 is quite different.

It is in fact located at 151 and available for peering.

Teksavvy for instance has peering with these people.

1 router1.vaxination.ca. (10.0.0.1 ): 2ms 1ms 1ms
2 piero.pppoe.ca. (65.39.134.4 ): 21ms 21ms 20ms
3 65.39.134.1 (65.39.134.1 ): 21ms 20ms 20ms
4 gw-ndcc.torontointernetxchange.net. (198.32.245.69 ): 20ms 20ms 21ms
5 204.14.16.157 (204.14.16.157 ): 21ms 21ms 21ms

(Note that it is 20ms from montreal to Toronto).

hops 2 and 3 are teksavvy routers. hop 4 in an NDCC router to which Teksavvy talks via the Torix ethernet. and 204.14.16.157 is the target ip.
