No material goods are worth your life. I feel bad that this guy lost his stuff, but seriously, what an idiot! If your house is burning you make sure your family and pets are safe and then get out of the way. Everything else can be replaced.
I dunno, I store a lot of my photos on my computers. Id want to save those. As time goes by, that will be even more common a wish than wanting to save a paper photo album...

If that is your main concern then do periodic DVD or hard drive backups. As much sentimental value as pictures have, your life (and the life of rescuers) is more important.

I don't really have the money to engage Iron Mountain for my offsite backup needs.

All I'm saying is, my inclination to save a computer would have the same basis as that of the person that runs back into the house to save their photo album. Not a rational act, but do you really suggest to those people "you need to do periodic off-site backups of your family photo album". And, if you do, do the targets of that suggestion look at you like you've got two heads?

You dont need to pay for offsite backups at all. I am simply suggesting that it ALWAYS a good idea to backup ALL your important files. My 200 gig, external Maxtor hard drive automatically does this on a weekly basis. You could also burn DVD's of your photos if you so desired and store them at work for instance (or a relatives!). Furthermore, using a service such as Orb does this for you, for free. These days its far more unlikely that a person, wont have at least a portion of their data backed up in one way or another. If pictures is all you are concerned about backing up then you can use (and share!) all your files with anyone, anytime, over the internet using a program like Shutterfly. You can even purchase all the pictures in paper or digital format if you lose the originals (like say, in a fire). Shutterfly will host all your pics for free assuming in fact, that you will by them.

A safe deposit box at the local bank would do nicely.

All my pictures and music are backed up to DVD R, and stored in my safe deposit box, along with my passport, and vital documents like deeds, auto titles, etc.

Sure, the bank isn't fireproof, but the chances of both burning down is very remote.

Buying a fireproof storage box, and keeping it at a friends house is another option.

Either way, still hell of a lot smarter than running into a burning building for computer files.
