I tend to think of the AOL user as naive or less then technically savvy, where as I consider the AOL programming the Black Plague!
Good Job Symantec!

I was wondering why my 200+ pieces of junk mail has slowed to 30 or so. Maybe not related....maybe so?

AH!

I've had to fix this 5 times already, and am staring at a box with Dial-up doing the update as we speak. It's so painful... damn you Symantec... Damn You!

Re: But...

Could this have also affected Netscape and Firefox? Starting on Saturday I was not able to connect using those two browsers. IE was working fine.

Ho hum.

While this is significant in that people were inadvertently cut off form online access, there is at least a little bit of delicious irony in the crappiest AV solution cutting off those who use the crappiest online solution.

OK, NOW AFTER ALL THE AOL BASHING, LETS TURN AND LOOK AT SYMANTEC'S PRODUCTS. I use Norton A/V, but none of the other crap, as I have often encountered major conflicts with other software, or mysterious situations like the above, where a Windows Update, or even Symantec update, kills internet connectivity. I'm not talking about 1 PC in a hundred, but more like 1/4 stop working until a System Restore or else netsh winsock reset catalog. I never had that problem before OEM's started putting their junk on every PC they sell. Now, you have to fight with someone and show them "YOUR CRAP IS CRAP".

Actually, it wouldn't be the first time Symantec did something stupid like this. All "we hate AOL" aside crap...

Norton AntiVirus and Symantec products used to be very good. Now these programs are used as tools against other businesses. Don't like the competitor? (who uses McAfee) disable them.

Symantec used to be good when they cared more about stopping viruses and at a reasonable price. Now it's all about the bottom dollar and getting that renewal.

IMO, Symantec became a POC after 2003.
