More Apple iPhone Evidence? 4th Quarter 2006? Sunday March 19, 2006 02:08 PM EST Posted by arn
According to Mobileread, Barron's online published an online exclusive (subscription required) reporting on comments by Johnny Chan, a Hong Kong based J.P. Morgan analyst, about the looming possibility of an Apple iPhone.
Last week, a Piper Jaffary analyst claimed they felt there was a 75% chance that Apple would release an iPhone in the next 12 months.
The J.P. Morgan reports adds a bit more substance to that claim. According to the article, Apple is working on "an iPod with phone functions" and is shopping around for a electronics manufacturer. Meanwhile, Taiwan Green Point Enterprises, the current manufacturer for the iPod plastic cases is also said to be in talks with Apple about the phone. "The chatter about the product is all over the food chain," says Bill Shope, Chan's colleague in New York who follows Apple. He believes Apple will likely introduce a cellphone by the fourth quarter of this year.
Apple has long owned the domain iPhone.org and also trademarked the term "iPhone" in Australia and the UK.
A history of the Apple iPhone rumors are summarized in this Guide page. |

| Yes but now the iPod is getting competition from MP3 phones and phones are computers. It's all coming together and this gives Apple a great opportunity to computerize the portable device...and then sell a lot of desktop Macs based on the phone.
I simply cannot see Apple charging $ 200 an iPod in 2007 for a device that plays music only. |

| reply to mgaus77 So you're saying it's not going to suck this time?
Seriously, I don't want a phone call even thinking about having the potential for possibly interupting me when I'm listening to music. The two seem so necessarily exclusive.

And people still will pay $200, $300, and $400 for an iPod in 2007 because it's functionality is only a part of why it sells so well. It's mostly about the name and the status symbolism. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

| reply to The Dv8or You know what really makes the iPod (and I don't think its name or status) - it is the appearance of the iPod and its the accessories for the iPod. I used to own an archos, a creative zen and a rio and none of them had anywhere near the accessory count the iPod does. I used to have to use a cassette deck adapter to listen to my other MP3 players while driving and those sound horrible. Now I'm out walking listening to my iPod and I get in my car and I can open my glove box and plug my iPod into my iCruze and listen to my iPod (and control and charge it) via my head unit. Then I come home and I put my nano in my Logitech stereo system in my bedroom and I can listen to my iPod without having to wear headphones. The only way to get other MP3s to work with those sorts of accessories is to use AUX-in jacks. These days someone might buy an iPod just because they can so easily integrate it into their environment. -- »web.mac.com/jwsmiths/iWeb |

| reply to mgaus77 Just because some analysts got together and got a hard-on for an Apple branded phone doesn't mean it will happen. I really don't see Apple making cell phones, it would be cool but they don't have any experience in it and there is already a lot of good competition from Nokia and Motorola and others. Analysts were predicting the mini would be a TiVo killer but it turns out they essentially just added Bonjour to FrontRow. Apple doesn't want to compete with TiVo because they want you to pay to download a show, not to record it off of the air. Apple would only want to sell phones if they could sell some other services with them. The only iPhone I'd expect would be a Sony Ericson or Nokia that had iTunes on it just like the ROKR/SLVR. -- »web.mac.com/jwsmiths/iWeb |

Oh, not again. The iPhone rumor is as pervasive as the "Apple is going out of business" rumors of the past.
Wonderful if true for those who want iTunes music on an Apple-branded cell phone (I don't need music on my cell, but to each, his own ), but it's probably not. -- neuronbob's web page |

Oh? It's been announced!? There is a solid release date? We know when and where we can buy one? Pricing is set?
I didn't think so.
It's still a rumor; still vaporware as far as I'm concerned. I'm not saying it never will happen, but your subject line is a tad misleading. Even the article you quoted avoided the hyperbole by using question marks...

| reply to mgaus77 I hope they don't use the same knucklehead who designed that hideous and underperforming iPod hifi to make this phone.
Wake me up when Steve's holding it in his hands on a stage somewhere.

| reply to mgaus77 I completely agree with all the hype warnings and eye-rolling. But it just makes sense to me that this will be the Next Step. And I bet Apple with team back up with Motorola to do it. No real reason, no insider info, just my hunch. Time will tell. KM -- War is a test of power, not a search for truth or justice. | This $ 12 MP3 player is why the iPhone is needed...because something that plays music on the go should be $12 and fit in your lighter jeans pocket...but a smartphone with computer and Treo like functionality should be a few hundred dollars for a long time
