1 edit | [Other] Is My Wireless Netwok Card Gone?
I've got a Sony Laptop that my daughter uses... (Windows Home XP/SP2)It has always been pretty stable at finding a network connection via our Linksys Wireless Router. Last night, my daughter said that she lost connection on the web, and on the network.... I looked at it and I see that the network adaptor is there, and after re-booting several times, still couldn't make a connection onto the network. I repaired the connection, un-installed, and then re-installed the drivers, and adaptor, but still nothing! I then hooked up a spare Linksys Wireless adaptor, and "bang," it hooked up fine, and now she can access the web, and the network......DO you think the built in Adaptor on the Laptop, has "gone south?" Also if it is gone, I was thinking of getting a USB Wireless Adaptor in place of the built-in one. Anyone have any good results using these types of wireless adaptors? I see where they have this one for cheap money, and I might just buy it for her. »www.compusa.com/products/product···pfp=cat3 |

| I've used corded USB adapters and recommend them to people that would be uncomfortable opening the case. They seem to work fine and give you the opportunity to position the antenna away from the case where that's advantageous.
I've also used bluetooth adapters shaped like that and range seems to be somewhat lower on them. |

Well, I have some bad experience with one. Want to buy it? I'm not saying it's bad, but I just could not get stable performance on an E-Machines Desktop PC with it. Theoretically, a USB (ver2) adaptor might be faster, and most likely would have a better antenna and the ability to orient it for best performance. I ended up buying a Airlink-Plus PCI mimo unit on sale, and it has been wonderful.
Have you tried deleting the item (control panel - system) and re-installing? A failure like you describe is possible, but much more likely is a configuration corruption. |

2 edits | reply to Paul928 Thanks for the responses. Right now I have a Linksys USB wired (corded) adaptor on the laptop, and I've always had good luck with that one. That being said, it really doesn't make the lap top so portable anymore, not that the lap top gets taken from one spot to another all that often anyway. Oh and yes, I did go into the Control Panel, and into the system hardware, and deleted the built in adaptor, but didn't have any luck with it working that way either. I even tried doing a system restore back to an earlier date to where the adaptor was working, just in case maybe some settings got screwed up that I may have missed, and that didn't work! I think I may try that usb adaptor on that link that I posted....The price seems right, and it might be worth a try.....thanks again |
