Problem getting a SMARTnet contract on second hand Cisco?

This is really a research question rather than a personal requirement.

I know the official Cisco line on this, this thread isn't for talking about that - instead I want to know what people's actual experience is.

We often recommend to people that they get SMARTnet contracts for their equipment but a lot of people in this forum only have the budget/requirement for less up to date second hand equipment so I thought it would be useful to get some sort of idea if, and how easily, people have got SMARTnet contracts for second hand equipment. We can then put a link to this in the FAQ when the subject comes again - which it seems to do regularly.

No apocryphal stories please - first hand experience only (or at least experiences of people you personally know, not "I heard of someone who......"!)

Please let us know if you were successful, what country you are in, the equipment you were trying to get registered for SMARTnet and its approximate age if you know it.

Thanks.

We have done it with lots of used gear. We ordered Smartnet and put it on the gear with no questions asked.

I'm quite aware of the "official story" as well, but so far on smaller items Cisco hasn't really cared to be honest. I believe with larger items they would get excited.

Smaller items that I've done are 806's, Soho91's, 1711's, 2621's, 3640's in particular.

Hope this helps...

I thought this was going to get no response at all

Thanks for the info.

Were any of the items more than two years old when you took out the contract? Do you know if any of them had had previous Smartnet contracts taken out on them by previous owners?

Thanks again.

yeah, I was surprised there wasn't a huge debate started on this one...;)

ALL items were more than 2 years old to best of my knowledge.... have no idea re: previous coverage though and no way to know for sure...

All the best!

Both.. originally via Cisco directly and later on via distributor (Tech Data and/or Ingram Micro)

If you have a SMARTnet contract on second hand equipment, that Cisco would not normally support, is it theoretically possible for them to refuse to honour it ?

I too have been able to get a SmartNet contract on a used 3620 with various NM modules and WIC cards, without inspection. I think they are supposed to inspect used gear but they don't always do it. I suggest you try and purchase SmartNet through a CIsco certified reseller. You can find a list on the Cisco web site. Try and pick one of the smaller resellers.

Here are some rules.... As long as the used product is not out dated box such as a Cisco 4000 series router, the Cisco would gladly support a product. Cisco, also continues to support products that have been purchased thru Cisco and are WAY outdated and generally these are the boxes that support some small business corps that rely on the box heavily. As an example I know that Cisco is supporting a 2500 series router with IOS version 10.x on it. The box is been running since 1998.

Cisco will gladly give credit for old parts if you have smartnet contract on the part and would continue on the new one...
