Use US-based VoIP service for INSIDE calling in overseas cou

Last year I was overseas making calls w/ my US-based provider WITHIN the country I was staying at. The lag time was HORRIBLE and call was broken up so much, since the routing was Overseas-->US Server-->Overseas, wasn't even worth it. Anyone know how to get a clean call when calling within an overseas country using a US-based provider?

How was your ATA device configured to the server? Was it configured with an outbound proxy?

I use vonage and lingo from france without any problems whatsoever. Your problem is because of the isp you are using in that country. Which country is it, by the way?

What country were you in? Try to find a provider with servers in that country.

True. Given your ISP, you may just be SOL.

However, don't overlook the suggestion of another poster, to avoid using an "Outbound Proxy" if at all possible (as that suggestion MIGHT help, even with a bad ISP). With many providers it doesn't help much (because a lot of providers always relay everything via their servers), but with other providers it can make a HUGE difference in "latency".

For example, the free provider "Free World Dialup", will let you either use STUN (and the main FWD proxy) with their servers, or use the "outbound Proxy" approach. If either party in the conversation uses the "Outbound Proxy" approach, all packets (i.e. the entire voice traffic) has to relay via FWD's servers. However, if both adapters involved in a FWD call use the STUN and main proxy (but no "Outbound Proxy) approach, than only the initial "call setup" has to relay via FWD's servers, and the actual voice packets go directly between the two SIP adapters! This "the voice goes directly between the adapters" effect, can in some cases make a HUGE difference in voice quality, especially if both parties are near each other on the internet (but one or both of them are "a long way" from the FWD servers).
