Eventually, the most cutthroat company will rise to supremacy and force out all the rest, creating a monopoly. The only way that you can have a true free market is if there's an equalizing force in place to stomp on monopolism--in this case, a government. People talk about government getting in the way of the so-called free market, but you can't have a free market for most things without having a government. Otherwise it's just mob rule. Of course then there's the groups like the movie industry who complain about the government intruding on the free market when it comes to the issue of censorship, but they run squealing to daddy when they want more laws to prevent the internet--which is a free-market zone if there ever was one--from crippling their antiquated business models. |
