| Oh geeeze....
People got nothing better to do then to sit around and look up gold medal winners previous business relations so they can pull up some dirt and get "A story"!
There are some seriously whacked people in this world. Got to worry about everyone but themselves. Now if this guy didn't win a gold medal no one would have said a god damn thing about it. Or even cared.. But people love to hate something. Even if its nothing..
Front page news eh? Hardly... |

| reply to TrueAudio Yeah, let's drag up the juvenile record of everyone who has ever done anything worthwhile. Or everyone in this thread (and that sad Security forum thread too).
Spyware, as it is known today, was business as usual on The Internets eight or even five years ago. The guy is 21 years old, and I doubt he even thought out the consequences of what he was doing at 13. Doesn't really matter though because what he did wasn't illegal.
Do I think adware (which is really what this was) isn't A Bad Thing? No. But there are far nastier things out there to spend all this indignant energy on. These folks make it sound like he's running for President. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

| You evidently aren't one. Robbing a bank is illegal. What he did isn't.
And...if you robbed that bank as a minor, it's a good bet that you'd have that erased once you turned 18.
Try again. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |

The additional laws were created to make it easier to prosecute these sorts of scumbags. But exploiting security holes to place spyware on someone's computer has never been legal.
I find it amazing anyone would defend someone that exploited any security hole for their own personal profit at the expense of someone else. As someone that has spent more hours than I can count eliminating spyware from all of my computers and my friends computers, I think death by slow torture would be too good for these guys. These people are the scum of the earth and the bane of the Internet. Hiding behind age and lack of more explicit laws doesn't change that.

| reply to RadioDoc The dude's not running for PResident, true, but that doesn't mean that he gets a free pass for being a greedy, unscrupulous git.
What has this guy done that was worthwhile? Win a gold medal? Sorry, I don't think winning an Olympic Gold Medal is really worth a damn thing. The Olympics are dead, and winter Olympics have been dead for years.
Great mogul skier? Best in the world? BFD. Just another geek whose d--k is too small.
And anyone who thinks that a 13 year old can't understand the consequences of their actions, well, that's parenting today for you. Totally clueless.

Which I guess is why you have not got off your fat ass and out of your parents basement to win one.
While what Dale did to make money is open for discussion winning a Gold medal for anything is a fantastic achievement,

1 edit | reply to hobgoblin No, its not a fantastic achievement. Curing a disease is a fantastic achievement. Fighting hunger is a fantastic achievement. Building an honest business and providing employment opportunities is an honest achievement.
Poor inner-city youth who fights his disadvantages, gets sponsors, lives on cheerios for 4 years, then wins a gold medal...that's a fantastic achievement.
Rich, unscrupulous pr-ck who skis full-time because he hobbles hundreds of thousands of peoples' pc's with crapware wins a gold medal...no. Not fantastic.
A little perspective, please.

When you have achieved anything let me know. sitting reading some on line forums does not make you an expert.
