I started playing around with Radio Mobile Deluxe yesterday.
My first picture!
Thought to start a new thread about it. I made a quick model with following assumptions:
Position: 33.78292 -84.39736 286.97
Corner antenna, 14 dBi, height 15 meters facing East
City 70% setting
Client assumed to be a 2 dBi omni height 2 meters.
I don't see how I can specify downtilt on antenna?
It's really quite cool to be able to model all that terrain. In an urban area without towers, and trees and structures everywhere, it's hard to get a grasp on where your dead-zones will be. I now can see a big fat dead-zone due to a small hill to the east and slightly south of the coverage zone.
I was sufficiently impressed, that I dropped the author some PayPal money. He's released 2 updated versions of it in the last few days, up to 7.10 now, pretty active. |

Good Job!!! It'll get easy now that you have the basics figured out. It is VERY logical once you grasp the concept of the program!
What map overlay is that? I like the effect! |

I think I used the USGS 1-arcsecond data for elevation, and MapQuest for the road overlay. Looks pretty cool in the 3D projection, but boy it takes an evening of fiddling to get that first picture!
Anyone know if there is a way to define more antenna? And downtilt? A 90 or 120-degree sector is only somewhat like a corner antenna.
I'd love to see with 1/9th arc-second data, but the website here:

I feel like those accountants must have during the very first demo of VisiCalc. Something that will really make my work MUCH easier. |

Yahoo has a group for RMD. Just do a search for it. I am at work right now and Websense won't let me hit the groups to find it. There are a lot of guys that post there and have a lot of good input. |

I'd really need to install a copy on a clean PC to give accurate HowTo information. I had a number of wrong turns and didn't keep notes. I may try that later this evening if I get time.
A lot of the linked HowTo's from the RM site are out-of-date and incomplete from a novice standpoint. If you mush them together you can get there, but it takes time. I still think the Wiki is the way to go long run. From experience, people tend to more often make the minor edits needed when the program changes. |

The .ant files in your Radio Mobile install directory consist of 360 lines. Each line with one floating point number on it ... sort of like this:
0.0
-2.4
-3.5
-5.2
...
-1.2
Line one represents zero degrees (realtive to the antenna's favored direction). It is almost always 0.0 because the antenna pattern is defined as -dB LOSS below maximum gain.
Each line represents one degree of the antenna's pattern. Zero degrees is at the top. Degrees increase clockwise around the antenna. 180 degrees is directly behind the antenna.
You can do this the hard way or you can download an Excel spread sheet to help you. That spread sheet extrapolates between ten degree points.
I don't have the links but it is in the file section on the Yahoo group.
AFIAK RMDLX does not do downtilt.

It'd be nice if someone did a very easy how to guide with screen shots, even I am baffled on how to introduce the elevation data and Mapquest overlay.. Not to mention the elevation data seems hard to find.
I've read maybe 2 guides that didn't help at all and were complicated. Sigh, I wish that RM made it's own directories and did more of the work itself
Maybe someone would be so kind to incorporate a guide in that wiki?:)

There was a thread here not long ago that covered some of the basics. Perhaps it could be stickied or added to the FAQ?
I've been meaning to give it a spin on my Mac under VPC. Mainly just to see my own area, we've got neat topology here. 07042 for the curious...

This is the thread. It is very accurate if you start with DADOGS post for the downloads and setup. Then skip down to DADOGS post about "internet options". After that there is a nice entry about yahoo groups by DADOGS that gives information about the groups as well as the author of the RMD software, then there are entries about "unit properties", "keep in new picture", and "single polar" coverage. I forget who they were from....oh yeah, it was DADOGS.

I'll do my best to give an overview of how I go about making my maps. I'm not saying it is the only or best way, rather it was how I figured it out. Feel free to comment as I go. I am sure I may have missed something along the way and someone may have a better way of doing it. It may have to be in several segments as time allows, but I'll do my best to get it in as quickly as possible.
First, use this step by step to set up the PC

Set up two units to start (even if they have the same lat/long). Later, when you are ready to make a coverage map, you will have to have two links to create an AP and SM scenario. |
