[Equipment] Incoming audio too loud

I have noticed that the sound I hear using my PAP2 is very loud, sometime to the point of distortion. If I call the same number on my POTS line and compare it to the VOIP line it is much louder.

I checked the settings and the PAP is set to -3. I find if I bring it down to -12 it matches the POTS line. So I wonder if this is a problem with the PAP or with my provider?

Re: [Equipment] Incoming audio too loud

There isn't a 'problem' , just that your POTS signal experiences some loss after travelling thousands of feet. If your experience is like mine call quality is much better with VoIP than POTS.

Volume also varies somewhat by provider. I've had SBC and some CLEC's as well, the CLEC volume was much better.

Most telephony devices such as terminal adaptors, channel banks, etc. are at the same level as your PAP2.

Adjust the volume as you see fit. I've had to adjust the gain down as well or my PBX distorts in conference mode.

I had a similar problem and had to call Vonage to turn the volume down to -3. Its still lounder than a wire line, but acceptable.

How did you make the change yourself? Do you have an unlocked box?

Re: [Equipment] Incoming audio too loud

I am not using Vonage, so my PAP2 is not locked. By default my unit was set to -3. I had to bring it down to -12 to make it match my POTS line. I never found the POTS line to be too low, it sounds just right to me. I am just concerned that the huge jump I had to make in the level is indicative of a bigger problem somewhere else in the chain.
