[XP Pro] XP Boot.ini strangeness

I threw this question out there in May of '05 and only got a few ideas about it. Here's my boot.ini file:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /forceresetreg /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

What is /forceresetreg?

Wow, not much out there.

One thing I found seems to imply it dictates how the system will restart itself when you do a Start->Restart.

timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="microsoft windows XP home edition" /forceresetreg /fastdetect

The KB entries are hazy on what to change in the boot.ini in order to correct the KB 314477 (Corrupted ntoskrnl.exe file) problem, and I can't write to the NTFS system on the laptop HD anyway. Web search of "forceresetreg" failed to turn up info on this switch, which seems to force a reset of the registry? The one mention of this switch was a boot.ini file from a fella with a non booting Toshiba, buried in the 200+ line dump of his bootstrap.

Have you run HijackThis recently...found this...

»ask-leo.com/why_do_i_get_window_···ows.html

Finally found it. Ran HijackThis and noticed the following two entries:

URLSearchHook: SrchHook Class - {44F9B173-041C-4825-A9B9-D914BD9DCBB3} - blank (file missing)

URLSearchHook: (no name) - ~CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

I instructed HijackThis to fix these two, which it does by resetting the registry value to the default value.

The Op should make a image of the Drive just in case it wont boot after altering it.
