| Thanks, how embarrasing.
I've got a question about speed. Obviously my old eMac is no speed demon, and the fact that I shut down at night is less than ideal...
I just wonder what typical speeds are for various user's set-ups regardless of wether they run 24/7. I'd like to know specs PCs, Macs, fingers, toes, whatever.
I'm most curious about what would be a decent multiple of the minimum speed [especially before I share mine, lol] running 24/7 and or shutting down at night.
Thanks for the welcome!

| reply to dandelion I have a PC and a laptop that shuts off at night, FAH is good about running in the background and lets other programs running take the lead. Both mine are pretty fast but are pretty new, but lots of people run FAH on older machines without problems. The console according to consensus seems to give less problems then the GUI due to video drivers, but lots use the GUI with no problem. -- want to know what I'm doing? dandelion's place |

| reply to X Man Machines that I have -
desktops 1x P4 3ghz usually folds 24-7 4x P4 2ghz 1-3 fold 24-7 1x P4 1.7ghz sometimes folds 24-7 3x P3 733mhz just got these recently, 1 running 24-7 as test now.
laptops - usually off when I'm home 1x P-M 1.73ghz Main machine when away from home 24-7 folder 1x P4 1.8ghz Piece of junk, don't ever take it with me. 4x P3 1ghz 2nd machine when away from home sometimes folding 24-7. Others are spares but may get turned on for folding when I can afford the big electric bill.
Basicly if it gets turned on it folds for at least a few days before it gets shut off. I know all of my machines 1ghz and above have .90 or greater performance fraction meaning there's 90 percent of the allowed time remaining. I suspect the 733mhz machines will have .85 or greater.
As you can see I have a bit of variety. If my room isn't too hot I keep more running. I would set all of them up around the house but I'm not paying the electric bill so I try to limit my usage a bit. The minimum speed for a machine dedicated to folding 24-7 last I heard was in the 450-500 mhz range. Double if the machine is on only 12 hours a day and triple for 8 and so on. This is so you can meet the deadlines on any unit but they tend to vary lots so the best way to find out whats fast enough is to run some units and see if your making the deadlines. |

| reply to dandelion Not sure about the mac client, but in the PC client there is an option to select WUs without deadlines. This allows older machines to contribute without slowing down any projects. (The majority of projects have WUs that build on each other, so returning them quickly helps the science go faster.) No need to be embarrassed about speed- all contributions, no matter how slow, are important. |

| reply to Rel5 Thanks, everyone for the welcome.
Rel, thanks for some stats. You have a pretty cool cluster of CPUs there.
The little eMac is running at slightly better than 2.5X the minimum speed, even only folding slightly more than half the time.
I already started a 241 point WU but I started it before I joined here. I assume the points will go to the anon name FAH gave me, and not the name and team I changed it to. No biggie. I'm not starting over 'cause it's half done.
Thanks again,

| As long as the name and team are changed before the unit gets turned in the points will go to you. Also since your running a Mac you cant really compare them by speed. Most likely it will get them done just fine. There are a few people here who have macs that might be able to give you an idea of what to expect from yours. |

I run two dual CPU P3/550's, one P4/2400 and one AMD XP+ 1700 (1.2 GHz) and don't restrict what any can get. One P3 runs two instances of the command line client, and the other runs one. The P4 zips right through the toughest assignments, but even the P3's manage to get a 600 pointer done in plenty of time. They all run 24/7. -- Toolmaster of La Grange. |
