| Help: IOS for 871
Hi, My new router 871 and a Smartnet NBD contract are coming in few days. The Cisco main site is pretty confusion about smartnet contract and pretty limited of info without an account CCO. My router is a 871-K9. About the IOS with a Smartnet NBD contract I'd be possible to download legally IOS upgrade, but my question is: all the 871 family IOS are abvailable for anyone with any 871 router or only a subset of them ? For examples there's a 871-k9 and a 871-SEC-k9, the same router with only different Flash RAM and IP Advances service on IOS. I can legally download that IOS or I must pay an additional fee for the addition capability over the smartnet contract ? Looking in this forum a lot of users talk about swap different IOS on 871, after a Flash/Memory Upgrade, so look like the 871-sec-k9 IOS is free to anyone. is right ? Thanks. | | tdoran Premium join:2003-09-27 Ridge, NY

The SmartNet contract allows you legally to download the same OS feature level upgrades that was installed on the 871 as shipped, and covered by that SmartNet. There is no such thing as a free upgrade. But, can you download a different feature level, the answer is yes for now, you can do that, but Cisco is auditing and monitoring most downloads.
I believe you should have obtained the CISCO871-SEC-K9 Cisco 871 Security Bundle with Advanced IP Services from the onset, as it is more expensive to do a feature upgrade.
Though it does not really cost that much more, I strongly feel that the CISCO871W-G-A-K9 Dual E Security Router with 802.11g FCC Compliant with the factory bundle option to upgrade to Advanced IP Services, is the best value.
If your order has not shipped, maybe you could change at this point in time.

| reply to mazzy7 mazzy, That is indeed quite the philosophical, and possibly moral, question you pose.
What your contract states is that you can download any newer version of the IOS level that shipped on your router. In order to upgrade to a higher IOS level one must purchase that IOS version from a reseller & then one is entitled to those updates as well.
In practice, at least on the small consumer-grade routers, Cisco seems to turn a blind eye, if you download a more capable IOS image than the one that came upon your router. Is it a violation of your contract to do so? Yes, it is. Has Cisco ever lowered the hammer on someone for doing it? Not to my knowledge.
Now if you go downloading every IOS image for every piece of equipment on Cisco's site every time a new release comes out then you'll probably catch someone's eye from Cisco sales.
I have purchased a 871 Wireless, a multi-year SmartNet contract, a Cisco-branded flash RAM upgrade, and a Cisco-branded SDRAM upgrade. Given the mark-up they tack onto the (SD)RAM upgrades alone I don't think Cisco is losing much money over me downloading the superior IOS image every release.
However, you'll have to let your conscience be your guide on this one. | | tdoran Premium join:2003-09-27 Ridge, NY

But, that could lead to big trouble later on, as I have hear (un-officially) that Cisco is working to "lock down" downloads, or to justify the download to the contract.
Knowing Ciscos desire for increased revenue, this would not surprise me if it will happen soon.
For business use, it is a risk, as it could be found out in a security or license audit, and probably not worth taking; for other uses well. . .

| reply to Innuendo Well, First of all Thanks. About 871SEC-K9 I've pass up on it because I've plan to upgrade the Flash ROM to at least 36 or go for the max 52MB in near future so pay 120 euros more for only the more feature of SEC edition I think is a wastle of money for the moment. I'm a single user and in my country isn't very easy to buy cisco for single customer, even more personalized configuration. About IOS license upgrade (I suppose that exist something about it) are available online, some SKU to looking for ? Thanks. | |
