| Cingular refuses to keep my old ATT Wireless plan
I am an old ATT Wireless (now Cingular) customer, and my contract is up soon. I would like to stay with Cingular, but they refuse to sell me a phone without first switching me to a new Cingular plan, which I don't want to do because my plan is cheaper and has more minutes than what Cingular now offers. My phone is old and falling apart.
Anyone run into this problem before? Where can I buy a phone and just stick my existing SIM card in there so that it just works? |

They'll sell you a phone if you bitch enough and get in touch with the right people. I wrote a short BBB complaint, and some chump from Austin called me with a list of 3 or 4 phones they still offer to ATT plan people.
Some advice for you: Don't bother. The phones are crap (all low end Nokias) and require 1 or 2 year contracts in order to get them under $50.

1 edit | reply to roma007 If I recall correctlly, Cingular doesn't lock the phones on thier network so you can just go out and buy one from any one cellular reseller, pop in your att sim card, and use it. (it works on teh razr, I've tested it)
That being said, I'm not sure if its worth keeping the old att service plan. I don't think it gets the same quality of service as those on the cingular network. One time a CSR even admitting that the old attws network was being cannabilized for their cingular customers. -- NYC Pagans |

| reply to roma007 Cingular does lock the phone now, only way you can get it unlocked is after a few months of service you call them up..or just take it somewhere to get it unlocked -- -MusikManLp7-nude cheat, what is it? and how do i do it-Phantom44357-up, up, down, down, left, left, right, right, jump off your roof. |

| I'm just pissed off at the red tape behind keeping my plan and something as simple as getting a new phone. I'd rather throw money at another provider - it'll probably be T-Mobile.
Plus, customer service has gotten worse since the merger. -- AIM | B | irc.removed.us - #dslr | Give me a ring: 718-606-4100 |

Just get on Craigslist and buy a phone, they are all over the place. It's easy to buy a phone that is unlocked or get it unlocked. Cingular does lock their phones. I know, I unlocked mine to use T Mobile in them sometimes. -- Just because a word has an S in it doesn't mean it needs an apostrophe too. |

| reply to roma007 The best way for what you want is to go on eBay or something and get a phone....although its hard to believe that an old AT&T plan (I just switched to Cingular from AT&T myself this week) would be cheaper with more minutes than a new plan. But if that is indeed the case, just go on eBay and get a phone. -- United We Stand - The world shall remember the events of September 11, 2001 |

IMHO, it's still best to stay on the "old" att (blue)plan for a couple of reasons instead of cingular (orange). (1) The att plans are usually better (more minutes, less money) than the orange plans. (2) better coverage, the blue phones can access both the old att and the new cingular network, while the cingular sims can only access the orange network.
Cingular will do everything to get you to switch from the old att blue to the cingular orange. More money and a new (probably) 2 year contract. |

I would just buy either a nokia 6010 ($40) or nokia 6101 ($99) from target. Both of these are easy to unlock, and I've unlocked 2 6101's already. Just be warned, the volume on the 6101 has been a big issue. If yours doesn't work, you have 90 days to return it for a full refund. I did an exchange, and no questions were asked. There were also no restocking fees. |

said by roma007 :I am an old ATT Wireless (now Cingular) customer, my plan is cheaper and has more minutes than what Cingular now offers. Anyone run into this problem before? Hi Roma007, Yep, Im in that boat now... Exception tho, I still have the AT&T service contract, but finally got a new phone out of them back in Oct '05 I think and it hasn't cleared up the Service problem at all, yet... Loosing calls Constantly !... GRRRR And to think that Sept 1, 2004 I renewed my AT&T contract and then I get the announcement in Oct '04 that "Cingular" has taken over... Ok, so service was ok and no complaints "UNTIL" August of '05... Had a Siemens S46 at that time and no complaints either with the phone, LOVED It !...
So after many times running their tests with them over the phone and all and checking the Tower thingy and all, I got them to give me another phone with all accessories (as I had just in July spent $45.00 on them for the Siemens)... The replacement phone I got is a Motorola V180 (flipphone, can't stand them, like the plain old basic type, no fancy poop I prefer) lol ...
Mind you, they try telling ya you need to change the plan but as you have stated, the plan I have since Sept '03 is better than what they wanted to offer me to switch.. I still have 7pm nites and they offer 9pm currently (sure u can get 7pm for $5.00/month, heck with that)... Plus I got more minutes currently, so what no rollover, was running bout average monthly...
Now ?... the past 2 months I haven't even Used all my minutes and I have 1250 or 1350/month and im 'Only' using around 690 of them PLUS, all the dropped calls I have aren't even showing up on the bill....
Im at my wits end with them, I tell ya and my credit isn't good cause of an old outstanding Verizon bill from yr 2000

Not necessarily correct. It depends on where you live, which phone you use, and which SIM card you have. In my case I can manually select between 410 (orange), 380 (blue) & 260 (t-mo). My friends with (old) AT&T GSM service cannot do this. Yes, we both get blue and orange, but each prefers a different tower.
