Seeing as how you're saying it takes you 4 hours, I assume you're talking about turning a DVD into a video file of some kind.
It takes me about 1.5hrs to convert a DVD to a DIVX file using HandBrake on my 2x2GHz G5. Beware that it will take you different amounts of time depending on codec. For example, h.264 takes forever. -- Rest in Peace Hunter S Thompson."There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. | Yeah, I was ripping to a file. Basically what I want to do is take movies with me without carrying discs.
Standard video was taking about 4 hours for a 2 hour movie. h.264 video would take 30 hours to rip. Im doing this on a PBG4 17 incher 1.5Ghz with a gig o ram. -- You're so vain... I bet you think this post is about you. |

You probably don't need to recompress unless you're really short on drive space. I did something similar, pulled a bunch of films from the tivo and put them on the laptop. Files were smaller than DVD, but still pretty huge, and are MPEG-2. Very handy. Plugged to old ibook into the TV to watch some stuff, watched movies on the plane trip there and back. I'd say that watching MPEG-2 on this old thing (with a new battery) would give me about 3 1/2 hours. Not sure if compressing more would alter battery life or not... I played with a few different types of compression and then settled on the raw files - anything that looked good took way to long to encode on the dual 1.8 and the old clunker ibook had trouble not dropping too many frames. -- enjoy zesty ranch man-flavored baby tacos responsibly |
