DVD ripping

What program do you use to rip DVDs? How long does it usually take? I remember someone telling me he was ripping DVDs in 45 minutes on his Pee Cee. Takes me 4 hours. Im just wondering if Im doing something wrong.

ripping can mean two things...

to simply decrypt and copy, mactheripper...takes about 8 min

to compress, handbrake...anywhere from 1 to 4 hours on most computers

Using MacTheRipper, it takes me 15-30 minutes, depending on the DVD.

Using DVDRemaster, it takes me 15-20 minutes to compress.

Using Toast 7, it takes me 5-10 minutes to burn to DVD+R.

Using a PM G4/1.2GHz, 1 GB RAM, internal LaCie dual-layer DVD burner (an NEC mechanism).

I also use MacTheRipper and it takes on average about 20 mins for me to rip a DVD.

Compressing it (using DVD2OneX) takes another 20 mins and burning it in Toast takes a couple of mins. So, about a 45 min process total, per DVD, to go from ripping, to compressing to burning the compressed movie on a DVD-R.

And it looks darn good too! I've played some of the movies I've burned at work and people often think it's the original.

Rip with MacTheRipper (~30min), compress w/ DVD2OneX(~45min), burn with toast (~30min). I'm on a 12" Powerbook, 1Ghz G4 w/ 2x Superdrive.

rip with MtR (~24min.)
compress dual-layer to single-layer with DVD2oneX2 or Popcorn (~30min.).
burn with Toast to DVD-R (~6min).

I'm on a 12" PB, 1.5GHz G4 w/ 1.25 GB RAM and an 8x Superdrive.

Toast can compress, you could save a step not using DVD2oneX.

Seeing as how you're saying it takes you 4 hours, I assume you're talking about turning a DVD into a video file of some kind.

It takes me about 1.5hrs to convert a DVD to a DIVX file using HandBrake on my 2x2GHz G5. Beware that it will take you different amounts of time depending on codec. For example, h.264 takes forever.

Yeah, I was ripping to a file. Basically what I want to do is take movies with me without carrying discs.

Standard video was taking about 4 hours for a 2 hour movie. h.264 video would take 30 hours to rip. Im doing this on a PBG4 17 incher 1.5Ghz with a gig o ram.

It's pretty handy... You probably don't need to recompress unless you're really short on drive space. I did something similar, pulled a bunch of films from the tivo and put them on the laptop. Files were smaller than DVD, but still pretty huge, and are MPEG-2. Very handy. Plugged to old ibook into the TV to watch some stuff, watched movies on the plane trip there and back. I'd say that watching MPEG-2 on this old thing (with a new battery) would give me about 3 1/2 hours. Not sure if compressing more would alter battery life or not... I played with a few different types of compression and then settled on the raw files - anything that looked good took way to long to encode on the dual 1.8 and the old clunker ibook had trouble not dropping too many frames.

Yeah, sometimes you can notice artifacts during playback with Toast's compression. IMHO compressing with DVD2oneX reduces this.

There's also NTI DragonFlix for compression (same company that makes DragonBurn), but based on my experiences with Dragonburn, I can't even come close to recommending more software from NTI.

This would explain why we got them for free to give away for the FLC.

I have problems using Toast to compress sometimes. Every now and then it will display an error when a drag a VIDEO_TS foler into it and say "the contents cannot be compressed", but I'll compress it with DVD2ONE and all is well. I like both just fine, but prefer using Toast since it's an all-in-one solution.

The only way I've found around that issue is to burn it as DVD-Video instead of DVD-Video from Video_TS in Toast. You will of course lose the menus, but Toast has iDVD like menu screens to put your choices onto.

Handbrake is best for ripping a DVD straight to MPEG-4 or DivX AVI. Their website is down right now but you can still download it: »handbrake.m0k.org/
