What is your backup access when Comcast is down

My Comcast connection went down this morning for a few hours (not sure why - maybe because it was -3 degrees last night).

It got me thinking of what I can do for backup Internet access if I really needed to be online.

So I am curious what other do when their connection dies - does everyone just grab their laptops and head to the nearest coffee shop?

Well, the only time I "needed" a backup was when the transformer blew(down the street). No power - No modem.

NetZero Free worked fine(laptops on batteries).

Netzero dial-up. I pay $9.95 a month but I also use it when I travel to be able to access with my laptop. I've been thinking about going to Netscape though. Same price but Netscape offers the higher speed for only $9.95 while Netzero wants like $14.95. I think Netzero still offers for free but only like 10 hours or maybe less.

Are you serious? I will let you in on the secret. It doesn't go any faster at all. You still connect at the same speed to the Internet. A few little browser tweaks will give you the same effect.

I also hope you didn't download their install software and install that NetZero dialer and all that useless crap they try to make you install. There is also a way to set up your dial up connection without using the NetZero stuff. You simply can achieve the same connection by going to My Network Places and configuring a dial up connection after getting the number that is used to dial to NetZero.

How do I know about NetZero? When I changed homes I was without a HSI for a little over a week and I bought dial-up for $9.95 a month from them for a month.

Want to know what exactly that accelerator does?

-Data Compression
-Cashing
-Mediocre Pop up blocker

I guess it really does do something amazingly cool....oh wait no it doesn't. You can easily set up your browser to do the same for free. Not to mention data compression sometimes messes up a websites look or causes issue with a website.

I have a free dialup account as part of my employment.
I use it very little . . . out here in the boonies, I only connect at 24,000 baud. It's painful to use.

Verizon NationalAccess with a data cable plugged to my cell phone. It connects at 240k(?) and uses my cell phone minutes. No additional charges.

The all inclusive version which uses your unlimited minutes is almost $90/mo.

When it was ExpressNetwork Verizon had a plan "MOU" - minutes only usage. Now it's called NationalAccess and I don't know if it's still available. Mine is grandfathered. The most recent one is BroadbandAccess. It costs $60/month for unlimited access.

I use my sprint phone with a data cable. FYI, sprint and verizon are the same speeds, around 112k up and down, with the exception of the new EV-DO handsets which are much faster. when you connect with the handset, your computer will tell you you're connected at 230kbps because thats the speed between your handset, and the computer.

Is it possible to easily add this service to my wife's Sprint phone and then remove it after I am back up and running on Comcast again? Or are there lots of charges on activation and de-activation?
