| Getting "Enter Network Password" Outlook popup box
For the past 1-2 months I've been getting an Outlook popup box practically every time it automatically checks for new e-mail. Outlook can be minimized and I'm working on something else on my computer and suddenly Outlook pops up "Enter Network Password" for pop.nvbell.yahoo.com and it shows one of my SBC sub-accounts in the user name field. The user name is a different sub-account each time, and it's never my main account. I also have Outlook checking about 5 Worldnet e-mails, a few POP accounts related to my business domain, and a few IMAP accounts at 5 minutes intervals - but an SBC sub-account is always the culprit of the popup.
I can click OK, or cancel and it will usually get rid of the box and proceed to get the mail. But 5 or 10 minutes later it pops up again, often casing interference in what I'm typing in a document or forum post.
I've got a client with Outlook who has just 2 sbcglobal.net accounts setup in Outlook and it happens to her too.
It just started within the last 2 months. Is SBC/Yahoo limiting POP e-mail accesses, or changed a time-out period? Any other thoughts?
Thank you. |

| Re: Getting "Enter Network Password" Outlook popup
It is an ongoing problem, and covered in at least one other thread. I don't use a regular mail client, rather, something called, "Mercury Distributing POP3 Client". It is a module in the "Mercury/32 Mail Transport System for Microsoft Windows". It is set with a 60 second timeout, and an 1800 second (30 minute) polling interval. Mercury runs resident, as a mail server, so this is constantly hitting pop.pacbell.yahoo.com. I am seeing an "Invalid password" error; but this client just moves on to the next POP3 server instead of retrying. A different account each error, and usually only a handful of errors per day.
Due to the nature of this client, which pulls in the email, then distributes it to local users, none of the local users see a problem. They are polling my local POP3 server, which is also a part of Mercury/32, so they don't get any errors.
It appears to be a low-level, and ongoing problem. Two other threads are in the forums:
»POP Server's Not working?
The other is an SBC Direct thread, so it is only accessible to the thread starter. -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| I'm having same problem with incoming mail ( not outgoing). Using MS Entourage on OSX (Mac). Seems to have started within last month or so. Using "pop.sbcglobal.yahoo.com"...and seems to constantly ask for password (which it is supposed to remember) and sometime just fails to check incoming mail.

| Ned,
I am reading over the posts in the other thread.....I have to disagree that it has to do with software on our computers.
This just started occuring this month, and I have not upgraded anything, changed service, or changed e-mail client.
It does only occur with incoming mail retrieval for me.
I'll have to follow both of these threads and see what they tell you. It is VERY annoying..... Norbert |

| I'm not sure if you can run a log file in your e-mail client. If you can, submit the logfile showing the errors to SBC Direct. That may help draw more attention to the problem. Outlook and Outlook Express have log file capability, and the Outlook popup occurs when the POP server responds with "-ERR maildrop unavailable.". Outlook Express apparently ignores the server errors, and doesn't popup a box. Oddly, it's only happening on 4 of my 6 SBC e-mail accounts. |

I enabled session logging on the Mercury/32 POP3 client. In the first 18 hours, or so, since enabling session logging, I have only one error:
12:28:51.111: --- Thu Dec 08 12:28:51 2005 --- 12:28:51.123: Connect to 'pop.pacbell.yahoo.com', timeout 30. 12:28:53.651: >> +OK hello from popgate(2.33.3)<cr><lf> 12:28:53.652: << USER %User_ID-3%@pacbell.invalid<cr><lf> 12:28:53.673: >> +OK password required.<cr><lf> 12:28:53.673: << PASS **************<cr><lf> 12:28:54.431: >> -ERR maildrop unavailable.<cr><lf> 12:28:54.434: << QUIT<cr><lf> 12:28:54.453: --- Connection closed normally at Thu Dec 08 12:28:54 2005. --- 12:28:54.453: This is just one of six sub accounts being polled.

| I'm not sure why everyone keeps thinking it's their setup/email client. One only needs to try and log into Yahoo mail servers via their web interface and maneuver around a bit to see how overloaded they are. And this isn't anything new, they've been this way for quite a long time. Take that general situation and add on the huge overhead being produced by Sober and you've got a perfect formula for timeouts and other email oddities. |

| I am not sure that is what people are thinking. Somebody posted a link to an MSKB article on Outlook 200x problems with POP3 access, as if that was the issue. Then a bunch of others jumped in to show that it wasn't limited to just MS Outlook 200x.
Or so I am reading it... -- Norman ~Oh Lord, why have you come ~To Konnyu, with the Lion and the Drum |

| Looks like sbc is acknowledging some kind of POP access problem at »csc1.sbcis.sbc.com/systemstatus/···state=ca
hopefully there are working on a resolution. |

1 edit | It's about time. I checked a few other states and they all say Email is "Impaired".
Of course now that they acknowledge the problem - last night's 7-hour OE log only showed the '-ERR maildrop unavailable." 1 time on 2 different accounts. And there was a new error that I hadn't seen before... "-ERR Server not ready. Please try again after sometime" showed up 1 time on the same 2 accounts. So maybe they fixed 2 of my other accounts that was having issues? |

| Having the same problem here for the last couple of months and still having it tonight.
I've been talking with level 2 tech for the last week or so and they are now officially looking into the problem because enough people have called in with the same complaint.
BTW, I have email accounts with Netcom (Earthlink), Pacbell (SBC) and Prodigy (SBC). Only having this problem with Pacbell and Prodigy. Netcom is working fine. Also, it mostly the sub accounts that are affected and not all of them at once. Usually two or three accounts come up with the Enter Network Password each time.
