| Anxiety attack after seeing Windows computer
Today I was at my brother's home. Of course he had a $ 150 an hour tech guy set up his Windows PC. I've been so happy with my Mac for this year...but suddenly I thought...could it be that Mac is the way to go? Why fight Microsoft? Isn't that the way?
The Microsfot screens looked friendly, its been a year since I saw Windows stuff. The tech was there. I guess that says it all. It was one of those new Dell mini systems...the fans were loud and variable.
Got an anxiety rush. I'm I doing the right thing? I'm gonna set up another Pro Care appointment just to feel better. |

I see no harm in having both what one won't do the other will. |

| reply to mgaus77 I wish I could take my entire set of windows computers from my office and give them away to charity. Unfortunately, some business apps I use aren't made for the Mac. I hope that once the Mactels arrive that I may be able to install some of these business apps on a Mac. If not, I at least I have my Macs to come home to. -- How many lawyers does it take to change a lightbulb? Three. | reply to mgaus77 Windows XP is adequate. Barely. Once you manage to turn off all the geegaws and annoyances it has. And figure out how to put the "My Computer" icon back.
Want something adequate for a low price? Go with Windows. Want something comfortable instead? Stick with the Mac. Want to throw money away? Hire a guy at $150/hr to install your Windows PC, and get the worst of both worlds. |

| reply to mgaus77 Last night I set-up a brand new Dell XPS Media Center 2005 PC for a client. It's a very sweet system, and MCE2005 is just awesome. It came with a 5.1 surround sound system, etc. I'm going to get them the wireless keyboard for it.
I have experience with MCE2005 and just love it. It almost seems like the interface was designed by Apple or someone that's non-Microsoft. It's probably true, they might have assembled a team or gotten an outside company to do it, since it's so un-Windows-like.
Anyway, back to my point, Windows needs lots of preventive maintenance and a close eye to be kept on it. I couldn't leave without making sure the antivirus was up to date, installed MS AntiSpyware, installed SpyBot and immunized, removed IE from the desktop and installed FireFox. What else...? I always install AIM for clients because they usually accept the default install values, which bundle a ton of junk and change all the settings (homepage, etc). I went through Add/Remove and uninstalled the 10,000 Dell offers and EarthLink/NetZero/QuickBooks offers.
Yeah, Windows is high-maintenance, but MCE2005 is awesome. Either Apple needs to step-up FrontRow, or MS needs to release MCE for MacOS.

I've also played around with Front Row for a bit, and while its a sweet & simple design, it lacks so much. How could they not have incorporated fast forward & rewind into it? Or if you are playing a music track, and decide to go to the playlist to look around, you can't go back to playing the same song without starting it over again. -- ·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´ |

| reply to mgaus77 $150 an hour? Are you exaggerating or did you ask how much this was going to cost? Oh my God. That's sad when you have to pay someone to do something so simple. And if it's not simple then you read the manual. This is exactly the kind of person who should not be using a computer if they can't even hook up a couple wires. |

They cover all the whole-house A/V stuff. There are very, very few mentions of Apple outside of the iPod related toys (there's a device that lets you dock an iPod into the wall and play it throughout the house). I look at this and wonder why Apple has not gone into this ever more lucrative market with some type of "media center" box/OS. |

| Sadly, the high-end market is perfect for Apple in so many ways. I know countless people that have Windows MCE machines connected to their plasmas for watching TV/DVR/DVD and surfing.
Now MS came out with their new wireless keyboard that's nifty, most of these people were buying the Gyration combo. Many of these people bought those cube-shaped CISNet computers that CompUSA was selling, and they're maybe double the size of the Mini.

I personally use both Windows and OSX..The problem with Windows, its not designed for idiots or the average user, this is not a dig at anyone. You pretty much have to know what you are doing out of the box, this is where MS could improve alot. |

| IIRC, it's right-click on the desktop, select Properties, select the Desktop tab, click the Advanced button, then select the My Computer checkbox. So intuitive. If Apple pulled something like that (and they have on occasion), Windows users would be coming out of the woodwork to sneer; for Microsoft, it's business as usual; LOTS of stuff is like that. |

| By default, My Computer is in the Start menu. If you have the Start menu open, you can right-click on the My Computer icon and select "Show on Desktop."
