Re: About This Forum

What's in a name? Let's start with DSLReports & BroadBandReports.

To me DSLReports should be something focused only on DSL and BroadBandReports should be focused on Broadband (DSL, Cable & most anything related to broadband). We all know Justin would have dumped dslreports.com if it were not for Google and advertising.

Now, to the subject at hand. DC Special Projects & General Distributed Computing. DC Special Projects sounds like it is focused only on Special Projects while General Distributed Computing is more broad in nature and can encompass Special Projects and anything else related to DC.

I'd say it would be best to merge the two forums into the General Distributed Computing forum.

No matter what happens I would like to thank Justin for giving us a place to call home for all the DC projects!

You are incorrect sir! This forum's purpose is as a discussion area for distributed computing in general and as a home for the BBR DC teams without their own forum.

I agree.

PS. Those forum descriptions don't seem to be quite accurate.
I think they're accurate, but the word project might be causing some confusion/ambiguity:

Development projects != DC projects
Special Projects (e.g. Foldinator) != DC projects

IHMO: DC Special projects is for projects supporting DC projects. (in the form of software development, of team activities like the Foldinator project)

The DC Special Projects Forum is, at the moment, a forum where members in Team Helix's Foldinator Project hold discussions, which could easily be moved back into the Team Helix forum or into this forum if they so chose.

As said by a wise dog above:

I suspect that members of those small clubs stopped posting here since Eco posts started taking over. With it gone, and the soon to be release of newer DC projects, I would think keep GDC and merge DCSP into here.
Now that makes sense.

PS. Those forum descriptions don't seem to be quite accurate.

No you won't. Logic dictates that if you must close a forum you close the forum used by less people. I guess you aren't a Klingon monkey.

Even though the DCSP forum is an "open" forum, it has always seemed to me to be a behind the scenes semi-private forum. While TE may be gone, hopefully not for good, my preference would be to leave the GDC forum as the gateway to the other team forums. It could be an excellent way to provide exposure to new folks on the site and help them understand the DC projects. It may not be an overly busy forum but who says it has to have "x" posts per day to be valuable to our community. It could also be a great place for posts that would interest folks from the various teams without having to make posts in each individual forum. If my vote means anything, I'm for leaving this forum here and refocusing it's purpose.

Merge into here, or merge into there, I suppose it really doesn't make that much difference except to those who have a favorite forum set that they just have to change.

So why not combined the two, bring the smaller DC Special Projects forum into here.

As was stated earlier, since the BOINC DC engine has matured, there seems to be more and more announcements of various groups signing on to use it as a foundation for their projects.

We now have -Climate Prediction, LHC, Einstein@Home, RC5 here.

I suspect that members of those small clubs stopped posting here since Eco posts started taking over. With it gone, and the soon to be release of newer DC projects, I would think keep GDC and merge DCSP into here.

Welcome to the DC Special Projects Forum! This is the home of several development projects related to Distributed Computing in general or specific projects and teams.
23 people post here
This is the 154th most popular forum.

Welcome to the General Distributed Computing Forum! Think of this as your starting point to learn about DC projects and teams, and DC Projects in general. Discover what the various projects do and which ones are available for you to join here at BBR.
45 people post here
This is the 121st most popular forum.

Those purposes are similar, and not mutually exclusive. One forum for at most 45-68 people discussing current and future projects is adequate and 2 is too many. So we'll close this forum shortly.

Of coure there is! The reason the forum was created to begin with. I guess you had to be around back then to understand.

One need only review page after page of this forum's recent history to see how much discussion about special projects or any other activity has occurred here other than ECO clicks. GDC in its time was home to many exciting and worthwhile DC projects and there was abundant participation here, but that time has passed.

As said elsewhere, the forum should exist to support its projects and members; not the other way around. Scrambling to generate an appearance of activity at the last minute does not change the situation. A lot of good work was accomplished here over the years, but for many many months there has been complete inactivity other than ecology.

This is somewhat awkward because it leaves me with the appearance that closing the forum is/was my idea. However, the announcement that the forum would be closing was made; and now some information apparently to the contrary has been posted which just tends to cause confusion. My best information, not withstanding anything else posted here, is that the forum will be taken offline at some point. There simply is no valid justification for retaining it.

What's the purpose of the "DC Special Projects Forum"? as

Special projects is intended to serve as a discussion area for special projects of the clubs, to keep those projects out in the open rather than in their team forums. Mostly, however, it serves as home for Foldinator discussion. Crunchenstein discussion could occur there as well although it mostly takes place in our own, separately hosted forums. I think there is enough discussion that takes place in the Special Projects forum to justify it's existence.

This is the forum to discuss new DC projects in, and home to DC projects for which we have no individual forum.

It could be home to...
-ClimatePrediction.net
-LHC
-Einstein@Home (adopted by SETI forum)

Except there's very little chatter on the other projects.

I have to agree this forum is still needed. The need may even increase since BOINC will encourge participants to crunch for multiple projects. Since BOINC makes it easier to start up a project it is also likely to be more projects without a related forum that would need space here.

Where did I put my pom-poms?

So, what is this forum? If Ecology Fund clicks, which made up the bulk of the posts in this forum in recent history are no more, then what is left? Maybe we need to go back a bit in the history of distributed computing at BBR.

In the beginning a group of us got together and formed a SETI@Home club, and Justin was gracious enough to create a forum for us. He was even one of our top crunchers at one time.

As the SETI@Home club grew, interest was diverted to other DC projects as well, such as Folding@Home, and a forum and team were created for that project as well, and later on a forum and teams for United Devices.

I can't remember at what point the GDC forum came into existence, but there was a need to have a forum for discussing projects other than those run by Team Discovery, Team Helix and team Starfire and this forum is it.

This forum is home to our RC5 team and was home to our Lifemapper team until that project came to an end. It has also been home to our Climate Prediction team for quite some time.

This forum is for any BBR distributed computing project which doesn't have it's own forum or the support of any of the 3 team with forums. It is also a place to discuss upcoming DC projects and anything else which might be related to distributed computing in general.

I see a need for this forum, and maybe it's need will be clearer now and the teams which use this forum will do so with more frequency. It doesn't have to be extremely active. Some of the team forums are pretty quiet right now too. But do use the forum.

Feel free to add your thoughts to this thread. If you want your teams to grow, this is the forum to grow them in. Without discussion there will not be growth.
