My wife was away.

A friend came over.

I hid two large plastic bowls used for popcorn in the oven in a lame effort to "tidy up".

Later I decided to have a frozen pizza and turned on the oven to preheat.

Then there was smoke, and fire, and alarms, and a handy fire extinguisher.

Then there was a new oven.

Damn that sucks. I've done stuff like that before. Like make food on the stove then throw a bag of marshmallows on it and come back a half hour later and its completely covered in melted plastic and marshmallows.

You can buy a new stove, then tell the wife you love her cooking.

LOL. No chance.

I called my wife and told her there was good news - we'd be getting a new range. She was pleased but bewildered. I told her the world class dumbass thing I'd done, and instead of being in the least upset she howled with laughter down the telephone line.

In some ways that reaction was worse than her being mad at me.

Nice photos. I like the last two the best. Looks like the remnants of some kind of interplanetary struggle.

Is your oven self-cleaning? Maybe you could run it through a cycle of that. Of course, you might gas out the neighborhood, or yourself, in the process.

I initially thought to take some pictures to document my stupidity, but once in front of the destruction I thought it looked pretty weird, so I took a few extra.

That thing was well over thirty years old. It was hard wired so an electrician had to come out and install an outlet for the replacement range. He got a good belly laugh out of it. Needless to say I obsessively check to be certain the new oven is empty before turning it on.

My friend Scott came home one day and his wife told him that he was having hotdogs for dinner. (and to cook them himself on the barbeque)
He went and lit it, then went inside to gather the preparations for his feast. When he came back out, there were 14 foot flames licking the side of his house and up the trellis. The garden hose put out the flames, but it cracked the glass front of the barbeque. (but the old license plates form his corvette and camaro fit perfectly)
His wife forgot to mention the citronella candles (big buckets) that she stored under the barbeque lid.

The side note is the controls melted shut as they should (to control the flames) so he had to remove the handles and drill out the holes. As a result that barbeque was the best one I ever saw. Most other barbeques at that point in time just would grey the meat. (The flames were way too low to grill properly, some litigation about charcaol causeing cancer almost ruined grilling forever, they have gotten better recently)
One fathers day his wife got him a huge mamba jamba grill and I was given the super modified. It is old and ugly, but I have yet found a grill that had such a large range of control for the flame. My wife wants to replace it, but there is no arguing with results. When we go to other places and see their grill, even she agrees that ours can adjust to a much higher heat setiing than any other one. (Great for the preheat and initial searing, or when it is very cold out)

There was a large label on our oven at our old apartment:

"EMPTY OVEN BEFORE TURNING ON".

My wife melted a plastic serving tray.

I destroyed a pyrex casserole dish (even pyrex can't resist resting directly on an oven's element) that I forgot was in the oven when I was preheating it.

Our new oven has a window, so we can see if there's anything in it before turning it on.
