[winxp] Remote desktop and multiple pc's issues

I've found a lot of good info in these threads so I hope you guys can help.

I have five pc's on a LAN in the same workgroup all configured with static IP's and set with unique RDP ports.
I have a linksys wrt51 router set to forward each individual RDP port to their respective IP's. The WAN port of the linksys is connected to a netopia 3546 that is set to bridge mode.

I can connect to every pc on the LAN from every pc on the LAN but when I connect from the internet (from outside of the LAN) I can only connect to one pc.

I have windows firewall turned off on all machines.

I've tried the same setup but without the linksys and just used a hub but the results were the same.

I can't think of anything else it could be, I'm short of formatting all the pc's.

Does anyone have any ideas?:(

When you connect to one PC from another within your LAN, do you have to specify the custom port when you conect?

Yes.

And I specify the port when I try to connect from the internet.

I can also connect to each computer on the lan either by IP or by computer name.

Well, I don't think formatting PC's is the way to go. If they work OK an the LAN, then they work.

I would be looking at the router as the source of the problem. Is the one PC that works listening on the default RDP port, by chance? (3389)

Nope, custom as well.

I eliminated the linksys router and it was the same thing. And putting the netopia router in bridge mode should also eliminate that as the cause as well. Unless I haven't setup either of the routers properly I can't figure out any other possibilities.

Thats a weird problem. You mght try posting in the networking forum, might have someone there who had this happen before. Sorry I couldn't help you out.

Thanks anyway.

Should I have the mods move this topic or just repost it?

Ask them to move it.

Re: [XP Pro] Remote desktop and multiple pc's issues

On each PC go to the »www.canyouseeme.org site and see if the test passes. If the test fails then it comes down to an issue on the modem or router not forwarding the ports correctly.

A work around is to setup a VPN or SSH tunnel and access each PC through the tunnel, ie. in the case of SSH you only need one port open.

»theillustratednetwork.mvps.org/R···RDP.html

Personally I use CopSSH and Tunnelier to do just that...

Re: [XP Pro] Remote desktop and multiple pc's issu

All ports except the one I can connect to, fail.

I'm not sure what could be configured wrong on the router.

Here is a pic of the port forwarding page, if this is setup right then it means that it's something on the netopia that isn't right.

I am not sure if it applies here. I do remember that (may be older linksys model) for port forwarding to work properly. DHCP need to be disabled.

Re: [winxp] Remote desktop and multiple pc's issues

If you can connect to each PC individually over your local LAN from another PC on the local LAN then Remote Desktop on each PC is obviously configured correctly and working.

It comes down to an issue with the modem port forwarding properly, since you have isolated by removing the router.

I presume your testing remote access through the modem/router from a remote PC and not from a local PC using the public IP of the router.

Have you checked in with the Netopia forum for help with the modem?

»Netopia/Cayman

By the way, you don't need to forward UDP ports for Remote Desktop. Only the TCP Ports...

One thing I'm not sure if you tried it, but for example if you connect to a machine from outside, and that machine have a non-standard RDP port let said you set it on 3390, you do need to specified in the RDP connection to say

myipaddress.com:3390

Re: [winxp] Remote desktop and multiple pc's issue

When I login I do specify ports like the above pic.

SoonerAl I followed that to a t.

There has to be something else I'm not configuring on the netopia as I have eliminated all other hardware and software. It just doesn't make sense that only one port wouldn't get filtered but all the others would.

I have also posted a similar post on the netopia forum, hopefully someone there will be able to see my mistake.

Which IP did your port 80 forward to? I'm not surprise if the port 80 forward to the PC that you're able to connect from outside?

Port 80? I'm not forwarding port 80.

I thought that was only if you plan on using the remote desktop web client.

Your correct. If your not using the web based Remote Desktop method then you don't need to worry about TCP Port 80.
