Usenet dying; few use it; who cares

Rogers won't be the last to dump usenet. Very few users use it. Those who do can buy their own subscriptions. It is a cost that ISP's can avoid so that 97% of the users aren't paying extra for the 3% that do use it.

But like one post said, will this stop a rate increase or lower current rates? If only 3% use it and yet all customers are paying for it, then where's the return for the customer?

they dont make a move like this unless they are actively looking for places to make cuts, and when they cant make cuts, then the rates go up.

Now this is where microsoft will come in and offer some kind of news group software.

Microsoft already offers software that can be used to browse newsgroups: Outlook Express. It's not the software that's the issue, it's the connection to Usenet. The ISP is terminating their NNTP servers connections so the users will have to purchase a separate subscription (or use Google Groups).
