Doesn't suprise me

I'm actually suprised more ISPs haven't done this due to legal issues and low usage. Anyone who is not a major noob uses a pay news service that has better completion and retention than the ISP services. I bet more and more ISPs do away with usenet soon. Not that customers should be happy or anything it just doesn't shock me

Re: Doesn't suprise me

Perhaps some people don't feel the need to pay extra for usenet service because it isn't important to them to have better retention and speeds. Calling them 'noob's is very mature of you.

Re: Doesn't suprise me

yah i'd be a little choked... i use my isp's server for posting messages and what not, i just use a premium server for binaries. So I guess i could get around it, but for those few people who only use it for posting and reading messages in text groups, that could suck.

you would think maybe isp's would just cut out the binaries, it costs too much for them to maintain binaries in a decent fashion anyways, should be rather inexpensive to keep the text groups.

Speaking of "noobs"... are you even aware that there is more to usenet than the binary groups and downloading files?

If you're using the old-fashioned text-based newsgroups (like me) there's no need for long retention and there are no issues with completion. I would be pissed off if I had to pay for access.

Have you tried out Google? they offer free access the newsgroups you are talking about.

Yeah, they bought out dejanews a while back. It's OK, but the posts are not in real-time, they are greatly delayed.

There are a boatload of free providers out there. Also no post in USENET is realtime unless you are on the same server:p.

Re: Doesn't suprise me

The groups I use on Comcast are as close to real time as my emails are. Good enough for me.

I like using my current newsreader and it would be a PITA to switch to some other service when I pay Comcast a ton of money every month.

deja vue all over again

Google already has 'free' text newsgroup service, and its searchable too.

Re: deja vue all over again

There are plenty of free services for pure text and many people use those groups, but lets not kid ourselves what most people use usenet for, and why Rogers probably pulled the plug.

Interesting. I used to pay for Usenet access until I found by snooping around that the server I was paying for and the one used by my ISP were one and the same, or at least, belonged to the same company. That day I cancelled my subscription and continued using the server provided by my ISP which has excellent retention and completion. My ISP outsources its NNTP server and happened to be the same provider I was using.

Perhaps these people should outsource their NNTP server.

Comcast did the same (to giganews) and alot of comcast suscribers were not happy. 1 Gig per month, and downloading headers took away from that total. Anyone that could was dropping comcast and switching to verizon. Verizon has the best free servers around, and hopefully they wont drop it like Rogers did. But we all know what they are used for and IMO any provider is within their right to terminate that service.

Yea, I've used usenet since before the net went WWW, when my modem was still 300baud. Speed and retention mean little to me, I guess 20 years later, I'm a noob.....
