Gupta said less than 3 per cent of subscribers; or under 30,000; are Usenet users. She confirmed that part of the reason Rogers is discontinuing the service is because of its rampant use by traders of child porn. People, people... Instead of jumping to conclusions, maybe you should re-read the article. Here are some key topics that jump out to me, an average reader:
- '...Less than 3 percent...' - '...Part of the reason...' (key word being 'part') - '...traders of child porn.'
If you're part of the less than 3 percent, and a rampant trader of child porn, then you can by all means get angry and upset at the accusation.
Otherwise, read and understand that YOU SPECIFICALLY aren't being associated with child porn.
This is starting to get laughable now... |

| reply to scott2525 I've already said I'm not unhappy with my Rogers service. I don't use NNTP.
Regarding what I would do. I've already said that also. If I was mad enough, I wouldn't waste my time bitching to a bunch of strangers. What's the point. I don't consider anyone reading this my priest, lover, friend, or anyone else I'd complain to. I'd call several lawyers, ones who specialize in media arbitration or civilian law obviously..and I'd ask their opinion. I'd ask if they thought that Rogers was breaking the spirit of the EULA...and ask what they think I should do. First...I'd be prepared to ask if they charge for a free consolation..
The rest is up to you..but bitching about it over and over and over gets you no where.
And sorry if I offend in my opinion of milk toast Canadians. |

1 edit | reply to will98 Basically, this article makes me sick. "Old technology"...Geee, the telephone is pretty old technology, maybe we'd better throw that out too...or how about email..that's pretty old. And replace it with a "blog"...give me a break. Blogs (IMHO) are garbage, and a complete waste of time reading or writing. BLOGS stands for BIG LOAD OF GUPPIE SHIT. I've voiced my displeasure with Rogers over this issue. I use a few "legit" groups, like nb.forsale. Stuff for sale in New Brunswick. Does that make me a child porn freak because I like using that newsgroup and this old technology? NOT!! Next they'll give you two tin cans and a piece of string to put in between to use for data transfer, and they'll still want payment every month. I'm keeping my eyes open for a better deal with another ISP. It's not just the news groups, it's a collection of things that have happened over the last while, yahoo mail, then no rogers news server, then a cap...well..you get the idea. GREEDY BASTARDS is what they are! End Of Rant. |

Back to the subject Consumers can not do anything regarding rogers. At present they have all the cards. I checked now for Bell now only 256K is available in North York Area. I don't use newsgroup and my bandwidth hardly exceeds 10GB per month. So For now Go Rogers.
This forum is not Rogers forum but just a bitching forum. Actually this rants should be put under another sub-category.
As for Canadians they can just send letters and bitch in this forum. |

WTF are you talking about? You don't know me, I don't know you.
{edited for content}
Canadians like to talk the tough fight. I see a lot of pissing and moaning by a lot of people, but, what I don't see is anyone standing up and saying. Well, this is what we should do. That's asinine. Grow a pair already, or stop talking about it. |

| reply to jackr No, it's not assinine ... it's facing the reality of the situation dealing with monopolies who have far deeper legal pockets than their customers.

| reply to scott2525 I'm happy with the service. I don't use NNTP, so I have nothing to bitch about. If you're unhappy with your service though, whining here is not going to solve the problem, and give flat statements like "Takeing legal action is not a simple or cheap process and i am sure many don't have the time or money to waste" is at best asinine. Unless you've actually gone and talked to a lawyer to see what your options are, there's little but speculation in this thread. The problem with threads like these, is it show how truly Canadian we are. We're whiners who bitch and bitch, but do little about the real problems, always waiting for someone else to solve it for us, so we can go on with our lives. Typical..and pathetic.

| reply to jackr said by jackr :Interesting. Everyone complains, but no one's willing to take legal action against Rogers. The problem is that there IS NO LEGAL ACTION you can take. They've told you the rules in the EUA and AUP and you've agreed to those rules by using the service. In those documents they've stated that they can change the rules simply by letting people know ... and they have ... in the FAQ ... and that is sufficient according to their rules.
Moreover, if you read the EUA, you can't take Rogers to court ... you must go to an arbitrator. (Although someone might be able to challenge that, since the judiciary in Canada don't approve of taking peoples' rights away.)
Yes, you might get a lawyer to stand up to Rogers, but for the lawyer it would simply be money in his pocket because he is unlikely to win and knows it. Even if it did get to a court room, and if you won a case, Rogers doesn't have to have you as a customer, and you can be quite sure that you'd not be welcome as a Rogers customer again. QED. |

| reply to will98 What a load of ***t ! I can't believe the person who wrote this article would label Usenet with the words "music pirates" and especially "child porn". To those people who use Usenet, this makes it sounds like anyone using it is into these things.
I'm not saying that possibly there is some of that "material" in Usenet, but there's also a very good use for Usenet. How many people use Google Groups for example? THAT IS USENET!!!
The person who wrote this article probably hasn't even ever used Usenet services and seen what they are capable of..... I'd dump Rogers if I was a customer for this article itself let along the fact they are dumping the service. |

If you have the kind of $$$$ to put up to go ahead with that legal action be my guest. Takeing legal action is not a simple or cheap process and i am sure many don't have the time or money to waste. But if you do, go right ahead...... |
