| the future "file sharing"
torrent - an overwhelming number or amount; "a flood of requests"; "a torrent of abuse"
File sharing -the public or private sharing of computer data or space in a network with various levels of access privilege
peer-to-peer -From user to user. Peer-to-peer implies that either side can initiate a session and has equal responsibility
pi·ra·cy (pī'rə-sē) -The unauthorized use or reproduction of copyrighted or patented material:
Well hello everyone,
I stumbled onto the bittorrent world only a few weeks ago, and before that it was the limewire/kazza/p2p world for me.
One big question that I keep asking myself is when will ENUFF BE ENOUGH...
Let me explain:
I can find literally anything AND I MEAN ANYTHING on these torrent sites, and the alarming thing is that its all free, I mean really lets think about this (those of you who are on a mindset wont listen to me anyway so move along) if EVERYTHING that we once bought with our money is now "free" then where does that leave us.
Now before I become a hated person let me explain something, I firmly believe that paying close to 30 bucks for a CD is too much, Im not in the recording business (although I was in the broadcast business for 10 years) so I cant quote the exact costs, but I can say that I fully agree that file sharing is a great thing, especially music, but IN MODERATION PEOPLE.
I was in wal-mart the other day in the music section which is very vacant nowadays, and I overheard a young woman tell her mom not to buy the CD because "she could get it free online", the mother asked her if that would be stealing, the "daughter" paused and gave her mom a strange look, and her mom said that she would buy the CD because she wanted the cover art, lyrics that sort of thing and the daughter just smiled and said that "she could get all of that too". The mother finally purchased the CD citing that she liked the artist and wanted to support their work and I could have kissed that woman, I mean ladies and gentleman this is A WAKE UP CALL here.
Are you really going to raise your kids and download all their cartoons, and video games, and teach them that this is the RIGHT WAY TO DO THINGS, if you are I just wanted to say leave your keys in your car tonight, Im going to take it on a long trip and I might bring it back, but if I do I wont replace the gas. Your probably asking me what gives me the right, well its real simple, I dont want to pay for it and I think it should be free so that makes it ok for me to do it.
The truth is that there will always be those people who download everything in sight just to do so, and we really cant blame the fact that their mom dropped them to many times, or they had a bad childhood (heck most of them are still kids) on their rampant ILLEGAL AND IMMORAL downloading, but the sad stories are the people who used to go out and purchase that software with the money they earned, and now they download it for free, find a hack or crack or whatever, not because they have to, but because they CAN.
Those are the real scary people out there, the ones who know better yet continue to break the law, and YEAH I KNOW I SAID THE LAW, piracy and copyright infringement are ILLEGAL.
Before I go any further I just want to state THAT I ALSO USE FILE SHARING, so Im not a saint in anyway, but I will say this much, if the day comes when companies shut their doors because of the fact that people steal rather then buy their products I will be deeply saddened.
Heres one thing I love about the bittorrent idea, its distributed sharing and transfers, instead of that one guy who has this new game or cd and a high speed connection and 50 bloodsucking greedy 56k people downloading with no intention of ever sharing it once they get it (you can tell I am not a big fan of what p2p has become) here is this great forum where all these people who have this file can upload and download it to each other. Even though most are forced, the limitation of MANDATORY UPLOADING AND DOWNLOADING is a great thing, because now all can share fairly and no one is hogging the files. As far as seeders yeah, once some people (OK MOST) get the file they switch off their client faster then you can blink, run into a room and drool over their new file, without ever giving a thought to others who would have a better speed if they seeded it to them, and they make up excuses, my bandwidth doesnt do well, I had to go pick up groceries, my mom needed the computer, most of it are simple lies from greedy bastards who dont understand what "sharing" means.
There are thousands of websites of torrents and lists, some even charge to get them, but thats a whole notha ball of wax.
So youre saying if I have all this information on bittorrent, why do I have such a problem with all these people sharing these files.
Its real simple
NONE OF YOU HAVE ANY RIGHT WHATSOEVER TO HAVE THAT FILE, (with the exception or the REAL owner) NONE OF YOU PAID FOR THAT FILE OR HAVE ANY RIGHTS TO ITS CONTENTS.
Some comments in a crowd outside a theatre
" I heard this movie is so cool, my friend saw it before it was released, he got it off the net"
" This movie better be gorier then the first one, I watched that on a pirated copy on his DVD at home"
Comments outside a music store
"Why would I pay for that when I could download it for free?
"Oh he wont buy that, he can get it for free other ways"
Comments in a software kiosk
" Dont waste your money, I cracked that program and it wasnt any good"
" I think that demo needs an activation key, but there are ways around that you know"
I could go on and on and on forever by saying these things, and the truth is if your reading this most of you probably have said those things already. No I cant stop file sharing, and I wouldnt want to, because I believe it is a great way for artists to expose their new music (commercial radio wont do it, thats almost as corrupt as this whole piracy thing) and yes it is also a great place to share LEGAL FILES, a quick side note for everyone who is reading this still,
EVERYONE BITCHES ABOUT SPEED and download problems, heres an interesting tidbit, I went to a website called legaltorrents.com, and just too show that Im not giving a rigged example, the torrent I downloaded off that site was opened in bittornado, a free application, does anyone want to guess what I got for download speed on a 95 mb jazz cd with 6 seeds and 4 peers.....
1kb?
12kb?
20kb?
50kb?
I started at 590kb (regular comcrap connection) and stayed around that area for the 3 minutes it took to get the file.
So why is it that I can wait four hours for a cd that was "ripped" as everyone likes to put it, and only 3 minutes for the artist demo on legaltorrents. Same client was used so no bias there, and it wasnt a speed advantage on this test, so what was it.
Heres the secret for all of you who are salivating to know the answer...
56K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Studies show that even in this advanced age we live in that the united states is only 20% broadband capable, so the MAJORITY of people who are using these wonderful bittorrent and P2P are still DIALING IN, and their speeds will be unforgiving and slow forever. Now that isnt to say that all of the blame rests on that, there could be other circumstances at work here, but the point has been made.
I have no problem with people using the services with a dial up connection, but lets look at this for a moment,
Lets say you just found 20 people who have this game that you just GOT TO HAVE, but are too damn cheap to buy it, so you get in a queue and their are already 30 people waiting for it, now lets say your download is 300 mb and your rate on your super duper cable modem is supposed to be screaming yet your only getting 5k on the rate, well the person serving that file to you only took 3 minutes (60X cd rom) to load their game and share it, yet its going to take you 5 hours to download it form them.
56kster anyone (an insanely good idea) A new sharing place just for dial up users)
But I digress in all I have said, I talk like file sharing is here to stay, but this is the part I hate most, raining on the pirates parade,
I am a network technologys professional, I have a degree in information technologies, and I hold my MCP, MCSA, MCSE (for those of you who know what that means then you know that thats a level of expertise way above the wannabes out there) and I am working on a remarkable little piece of software with the help of some other talented people.
But first.... another example
Lets say you were transporting illegal drugs for your friend in your brand new Mercedes, and for some unlucky reason you got caught, that car that you loved is impounded and you wont get it back, and if you cry to the judge that the car had nothing to do with it, he will tell you that you were committing an illegal act and the car was just a casualty of war so to speak, so even if the police busted that car up you wouldnt have a pot to piss in as far as legal standpoints go, and another example is the boys that sneak into the quarry late at night for a swim, they know that the place is off limits and no trespassing is allowed yet they go in there anyway. One of the boys dies in the quarry that night and the parents sue the mining company; the judge tosses the suit out because the boys were trespassing and if they hadnt been where they didnt belong then they wouldnt have been in any danger.
I know this is all very longwinded but I am coming to a point soon I promise you.
Part of being a member of the IT community is bearing the burden of the knowledge that we possess, and the RESPONSIBILTY to make sure that knowledge is put to good use.

Joe comes home from school, he just heard this kick butt tune on the radio, he wants the whole cd but is short on dough, no problem he says as he fires up his desktop and loads his favorite file sharing application "ill just download the cd for free". Joe notices that during the night Microsoft applied a small update to his pc, he goes to his file sharing application and quickly starts downloading music files he wants to add to his collection. While downloading these files Joe notices that his pc is making a lot of hard drive activity, so he opens up his task manager, everything looks ok so he shrugs it off and goes to do his homework. One hour later Joe sits down and goes to his download folder to listen to his "pirated" jams, he is somewhat concerned when he sees that the files arent there. No big deal, he just opens up the search utility in windows and searches for all mp3 files.
0 FOUND!!!!!!
Thats impossible, Joe had over 30,000 songs he downloaded on to his pc, where did they all go!!!!!!!
Joe searches franticly but to no avail, there isnt a single mp3 left on his hard drive, and his family swears they didnt touch his computer.
What happened to Joes songs?????
Marissa is in college and she just found out that she needs this software for an upcoming course, she has the cash but doesnt want to spend it on the program because she wants to buy that new dress that Billy likes so much, so she fires up the ol desktop pc to see if she can get it offline. She notices that her school and the ISP sent her an email saying that file sharing was illegal, and a new policy was in effect at this time, and that their was a zero tolerance policy for violators, she just closes the mail and laughs, what could they possibly do to her. She finds the program on the app she likes best and starts thinking about that new dress and Billy...... Suddenly Marissa hears a high pitched whirring sound and it gets louder and louder, she jumps back just as a loud screeching noise erupts from under her desk, and tendrils of smoke appear.
Her screen has frozen and she decides to reboot, and when she reaches down to turn off the pc, she pulls her hand back from the hot button, She calls a local pc tech service to rush out to fix her pc, the technician works on the pc for an hour before giving her the strange unsettling news. Her pc power supply shorted out for some reason, sent the wrong voltage (to much) to her hard drive and caused it to spin so fast that it melted the platters together. The technician is sorry he has never seen anything like it, what could cause such a thing??????
The truth is everyone, that the masses are right FILE SHARING CANT BE STOPPED, does anyone know why, its called ethics. People who illegally download all this software/videos/music whatever have none, but the ISP and the companies they steal from have to. They cant go out and blow up your pc or arrest you so they try to build ways to stop it, and as we know that doesnt work.
But we are on the cutting edge, this little program that is being developed will be given to EVERY MAJOR ISP and as you all must know distribution will be AMAZINGLY FAST, the program will be given free of charge and no questions asked, all that will be said to those who receive it, ITS TIME TO FIGHT BACK.
In the world of your ISP they dont want to lose money by losing you as a customer, but this whole thing is way out of control, people get mad at their isp for shaping or limiting their speeds in this sort of thing, well it wouldnt be a problem if you werent there to begin with. Also in the world of IT people are trying to fight back anyway they can to stop this from spreading, and the truth is they are losing the battle, but dont be surprised if more then a few heads are turning the other way when this thing surfaces, most people will claim complete ignorance and will deny knowing how it got onto their servers.
File sharing will be stopped in the future, AT LEAST ILLEGAL file sharing anyways, but instead of arresting people and dragging them through costly drawn out courts where they can cry about their "rights" (the truth is you have the RIGHT to buy the software legally) its going to be a whole new fight, and I can hear it know,
You cant stop me ill block my ports Im good at this; ill beat you with this PROG such and such Your full of it this isnt right or legal (I NEVER SAID IT WAS)
REMEMBER PEOPLE, your ISP already has access to your pc, and if you cut that off, then you solved the problem anyways.
I am sure when someone loses an ISP due to banning or overuse, it cost them a few dollars, but imagine what will happen when they end up losing a $2000+ computer system to this new defender,
Do you suppose they will just go out and download a new PC?
The future is coming, and it will be a whole new ballgame
(Authors note: I myself will cease ANY FILE SHARING when this program is released into the mainstream, it will not be readily identifiable and therefore could be downloaded by ANYONE, including myself, and there will be no WORKAROUNDS to this, because the people who built and compiled it have sworn not to write any)

Between this and your vague references to some "software" you were writing, one might easily assume you were part of the Gobbles group: »www.theregister.co.uk/2003/01/14···ing_you/ Also see the center letter here: »www.theregister.co.uk/2003/05/28···mbhappy/
Incidentally, if your ISP requires us to use their software to connect through them to the internet, they suck. If they don't, but you think we have to anyway, YOU suck. The OS' built-in networking capabilities have been able to handle this for a long time (well, some operating systems anyway). Giving the ISP any access to your computer is not necessary when receiving internet service from them, as someone with the certifications you claim should have learned by now. | | Jaymcse

Anyway, the ISP isnt going to require that u use this software, you the user wont even know it exists, and furthermore if your not installing any p2p applications on your machine you have nothing to worry about.
as far as belonging to a certain faction or group, no i am just one of many that wants to see "pseudo-americans" stop abusing their rights and start purchasing the software or whatever illegally.
bye for now
