Novell and XP Home?

I'm going to be using a notebook computer at an office where I'll be a sub-contractor (non-computer related). The others systems at the site are running XP Pro with some sort of Novell client software. I need your opinion as to whether or not XP PRO is needed or simply an easier option to config within the Novell. I've got a home network set up, so integrating into that with the notebook shouldn't be a major problem for me.

I have absolutely no experience with commercial networking, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

I guess the first question is what Novell client software? If you run both "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from one of the systems at the office, we can see what you'll need on your system. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely:

There are differences between XP Home and XP Pro. Let's see what the differences are between what the other systems at the site, and what your computer, can do.

XP home will be just fine. The novell client software is used to connect to the novell network the office must have.

If you need to connect to the network you can download the latest client software from www.novell.com. Talk to the IT person to find out if you need to install the client as IPX or IP and get yourself a login.

If you dont need to connect to the network, you have nothing to worry about.

What access will you need on the network is the main question. If you just need Internet access and printing you may not need to install the client.

Sorry all. In an attempt to keep my post brief, I guess I left out too many details.

Basically, I assume that I will need to go through the network somehow to gain internet access. I've been told that they have a T1 line and I've noticed that others have to log off before the server can be shut down at the end of the day. I don't need any access to the network otherwise, and from my observations most employees aren't accessing anything network specific either.

I'm getting a new notebook specifically for this job and just wanted to make sure I was straight on which OS to go for. I've noticed most come standard with XP Home and didn't know if I should u/g to Pro.

Thanks to all of you for the responses and references. I'll check them out.

Re: Novell and XP Home?

If all you need is Internet access you probably just need authorization from a proxy server. Meaning that you may have to configure your web browser with the proxy server information. As long as you don't need to access Novell file servers and possibly print you probably don't need the client. Even if you do need to access the file servers and print there are usually ways around installing the Novell client.
