Auto-negotiation is fairly old technology and I would think the SB5100 ethernet controller would be mii aware and able to adjust accordingly. If someones router were old enough though, and not mii capable, it might make the SB5100 go to its default of 100mb-FD. That would cause a problem. Likely dropped frames between the two devices, meaning lots and lots of resent packets etc. So technically it certainly could be a problem.
